Do you think Racism will ever completely fade away?
 

I was thinking about this earlier and it seems that we have a long way to go. Do you think the day will ever come when people are no longer seen as black, white, asian, etc, and are simply just "earthlings?" Maybe in a few hundred years or so...

But on the other hand, maybe Racism is normal? Maybe it's just part of being a human being and it's in our nature?

I think Ronald Reagan had a good point:

"In our obsession with antagonisms of the moment, we often forget how much unites all the members of humanity. Perhaps we need some outside, universal threat to make us recognize this common bond. I occasionally think, how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world."

Maybe that's the only way it ever will happen?

It will continue to fade slowly but there will always be those who are insecure and revert to hate.

It can never fade away. We learn about in schools, movies/tv, and books. The only way for it to fade is to remove a select group of people from society and start fresh. Even then history will repeat its self with people wondering why some are black, white, and yellow.

We are creatures of habit and fear the unknown or unexplained.

Exactly. We learn about it as soon as we are able to learn anything and start thinking about peolpe as "black" or "white" earlier than about sex.

The categories we use have changed, but it seems that stereotyping itself is bred in the bone.

racism isn't going anywhere though

We work with different races all day long but that doesn't mean someone can't be racist. They sync together to over come an alien threat but I bet if a black street thug picked up a bat and screamed "Bring it on" the white guy standing next to him would call him a "dumb hahahahahaha"

Dont know about other countries, but it will be a long time for the USA at least. This country rose to economic dominance so fast because it was built on slave labor (blacks) and is being renovated on near-slave labor (Latinos). Those undertones of our society will not go away. In another 100 years the racial make up of this country will be majority brown, then I can see more Caucasian minority racism sprouting.

not even in another thousand years, judging a book by its cover is 100% natural, as long as there are physical differences to be pointed out, they will be pointed out. unless in that 1000 years our races interbreed to the point where we're all just a bunch of mutts (i use the term loosely, because i don't know what else to call someone who's basically every race rolled into one), but i doubt that will happen as people naturally tend to keep it in their own race.

People are full of hate. They hate their neighbours, people in the market, co-workers. They just need a rason to hate them. Other race is a reason for them to say - he is an asian - that is why i hate him.

Racism is an evolutionary trait, so it will never disappear. Nor should it. It's quite reasonable (and actually an essential survival skill) to be apprehensive of people who appear different to you. Your ancestors survived by using this skill and so will you.

I studied racism many years ago, and studies show that Chinks are about the most racist people in the world, followed by Pakis, then hahahahahahas, then Honkies.*

It's a myth that racism is solely a 'white' thing.

A former friend (who is racist) and I had this discussion once. He, in his own twisted way, may be right about this. His thought is that one day racism will be a thing of the past, because due to "cross-breeding" there will be no white, black, asian, etc...only "beige people", as he called them.

There is too much money in perpetuating it. As long as people can pit one group against another to gain power, it will continue. Just like rich vs. poor. Is that ever going away? I doubt it. Is it still okay to blame white people for slavery when most slave owners and slaves are dead now? If it is okay to blame people that don't own slaves, or ever owned slaves for slavery, then I suppose that makes it okay to blame a whole race for the bad behavior of a small percentage of their population. Not.

I hope so...people are people....thats how i feel about the subject

Does racism really exist or is it a label we use to suggest to ourselves that some of the worst excesses of human behavior, however feebly, can be explained away, rather than admit to a much broader and more fundamental flaw in our nature?

For example, when the people of one color are more powerful than those of another, they exploit that advantage in everything from wage rates through to the atrocities committed by the KKK. But that exact same behavior is seen whenever one group is stronger than another, whether the separation is race, religion, economics or whatever.

Unscrupulous politicians have often played the race card to gain support. But Hitler used Jews in the same way and arguably, George Bush got elected by playing the issue of gay marriage like that. Emotive appeals are often more effective than appeals to logic and reason and it hardly seems to matter what issue is nominally the focus.

For myself, I really don't see a person's color, but then I don't care what his religious beliefs are either, nor how much money he may have in the bank. But I still have mainly white friends, most of them are in the same social-economic class as I am and can take religion or leave it. So on the face of it I'm a racist, a snob and anti-religious.

Which of course is rubbish, because we also tend to make friends with people who enjoy the same entertainment, the same sports, the same music, people who dress and behave as we do. It is not considered to be wrong to make that kind of distinction, but they are the factors which cumulatively go a long way to determining the color of our friends' skins and which side of the tracks they live.

We often see racism where none exists but we also avoid the reality that racism is a symptom of something basic in the human psyche. I don't know that being more honest with ourselves would achieve much, but until we are, we cannot begin to deal properly with that dark side of our nature.

not as long as we feel the need to protect ourselves and identity. We do not think as a whole rather than in groups. the only way we will loose it is when we all fight a common enemy.

Racism, gender and even sexual nature are thrown out the window when it comes to needing additional people to fight a war. Where once there were no blacks or women in the army - now there are.

People tend to be scared by everything that is different, the root of racism is fear which turns into hate. We try to organize our homes, we have rituals to do things in certain ways, humans always try to create some stability and familiar environment. Everything that doesn't fit in this picture, scares us, often without noticing...the more we are scared, the more we want to get rid of what scares us.

This is certainly no excuse racism and hate, but it's ridiculous to think that we'll once see all people as "earthlings" and won't make any differences any more. Our whole economy is driven by exploiting other countries, other cultures. Wars are started because we think our political system and our morals are superior and others need to adapt them.

The sad thing is that racism seems to be tolerated as long as there aren't any bad memories from the past. Calling a jew greedy ? OMG, never, Hitler comes to your mind. Calling a black guy n1gger ? No, we had slavery, impossible. Calling an arab terrorist ? Silence, noone stands up and complains...

nope, it won´t dissapear.
It´s just that today ppl don´t tell it openly, but many of them still think racist. These days even more than in the past, worldwide speaking.
