Gourmet restaurant food or home cooking?

Which type of person are you? Of course most of us would like a bit of both in our life but if it really came down to it and you could pick one way of living would you go for gourmet food every night or good home cooking? I am pretty sure I would go with home cooking.

After Shock Media 11-16-2006 02:44 PM

I can cook gourmet food every night and it still be home cooking.
Honestly though I can only take so much "gourmet food" before I grow very sick of it and start getting mad cravings for something simple like a chili dog or a potato kielbasa hash with eggs.

Only thing I wish I could do or get is have someone help or do some of the cooking for me in my house when I am busy or do not feel like cooking.

tical 11-16-2006 02:51 PM

home cooking all the way

dennisthemenace 11-16-2006 02:57 PM

You lost me at the word gourmet. I can't stand pretentious food made by smug assholes. In that case I choose home cooked.

If it was simple, fresh ingredients cooked well kind of restaurant food versus home cooking - I'd choose restaurant.

Peaches 11-16-2006 02:58 PM

I eat out because I don't cook. If I had someone cooking FOR me, I'd probably not eat out nearly as much :)

wdsguy 11-16-2006 03:01 PM

home cooking beats all.

NickPapageorgio 11-16-2006 03:07 PM

Made this last thursday evening:

http://almostlucky.com/chicken.jpg

Chicken with tomatoe & feta sauce with homemade spanikopita on the side. Not real fancy I guess, but all fresh ingredients, all home cooked. The only thing I didn't do was raise the chicken and make the phyllo.

Good food is good food. I think that's the bottom line for me.

The reason I took the pic btw, is that I am putting together a recipe book for my newlywed brother as a santa day gift. :)

I have yet to be able to find kielbasa in London. I wish I could but in general sausages here are the downfall of the country's food. They have embraced many other foods from other cultures but they won't give on sausages. The Polish and German sausages are just better for my taste. Luckily with the influx of Polish immigrants to the UK in the last year or so it can't be too long until they are easier to find.

Take a trip down to Streatham sometime... there is a very good Polish store at the Balham end of the high street.

jayeff 11-16-2006 03:50 PM

In fact, look up Na Zdrowie in the 'phone book. It's just off High Holborn: I could walk you there, but I don't remember the address. It's a small bar Polish-owned bar which... ta da... serves Kielbasa...

LukieD 11-16-2006 04:00 PM

You can some great sausages in London. At Xmas near me there is a German food market with some really nice ones!

Getting back on topic it is a tough decision. Having said that I don't think it would be healthy to eat gourmet style restaurant food all the time. A lot of it is so rich. It's not hard to cook restaurant equivalent food at home so for me it would have to be home cooking.

Now High Holborn I can do..that is easy to reach. If they serve Pirogies too then I am their new best customer.

Where is there a German food market? Other than Lidls .lol (which actually is good for that sort of food). The home cooking I grew up with is very strongly influenced by German cooking as I am Pennsylvania Dutch (German). Whenever my friends want to go to Belgium on the ferry to pick up booze they come back with booze and I come back with proper sauerkraut.

Not to difficult to make as long as you have good access to a good fish market and you really understand how to prepare rice.
Though it may not look as perfect.

shekinah 11-16-2006 06:06 PM

My mom cooks for me at home.. It's the best than anything.

dustin101 11-16-2006 08:59 PM

i like a mix

bdld 11-16-2006 09:45 PM

now that would depend on who's doing the home cooking. a restaurant is usually the better option, quicker and less work plus it's an excuse to go out.

marketsmart 11-16-2006 09:45 PM

cook at home for me :)

It may be less work, but rarely is is quicker ever not to mention it costs a great deal more.

Vitasoy 11-17-2006 12:20 AM

Home cooking all the way.

calibra 11-17-2006 12:24 AM

Home cooking is for me. But you need some variety anyway. I can cook very well but still I prefer my mom's cooking. At the same time, there are some dishes you'd rather order in a restaurant than cock at home.

gecko 11-17-2006 01:17 AM

Nothing beats home cooking

MandyBlake 11-17-2006 01:29 AM

i'd rather go out and eat than cook and eat at home. :)

I was assuming both were of good quality. Most of the time by you travel to a restaurant and order you could have cooked a good home meal.

Definately prefer eating at home :thumbsup

Dunno why... eating out every night can wear off pretty quick and become boring - puts me off eating :)

Jakke PNG 11-17-2006 02:55 AM

Gourmet home cooking.

BaldBastard 11-17-2006 04:11 AM

I was a Chef for 18 years ;) better change my nick to old bastard any time soon.

Tell you what though next time I go out for dinner and some pretentious young noob pours truffle oil all over my dinner I'm going to go into the kitchen and ram the fucking bottle right up his pert little ass.

martinsc 11-17-2006 04:20 AM

home cooking :thumbsup

Sarah_Jayne 11-17-2006 04:52 AM

I guess what I meant by home cooking was non-fancy food...stuff mom and grandma used to make sort of thing.

jayeff 11-17-2006 05:15 AM

These days I'm pretty much housebound and Pizza Hut is the only local place with delivery, so I'm stuck with home cooking whether I like it or not. Fortunately I'm a good cook, but I really don't enjoy cooking only for myself.

I used to eat out 7 days out of 7 although that was also a lifestyle thing rather than choice. I simply didn't get home early enough to consider cooking. But then "gourmet" food isn't the only option. I had a more than passing acquaintance with greasy spoons from Hammersmith to Whitechapel and there weren't many parts of London where I didn't know which was the best chippy or couldn't lay my hands on a decent bacon sarnie. And at the other end of the scale there are expensive restaurants such as Simpsons in the Strand and the Savoy Grill, which also serve "unfussy" food.

I get your point tho. There are lots of restaurants in cities like London, which ride the latest wave or use prices as a way of ensuring exclusivity and the food is often execrable. I used to have several clients in the entertainment industry and many of them seemed to be drawn to such places. Thanks to them I have eaten more overpriced crap than I care to think about :)

SomeCreep 11-17-2006 05:17 AM

gourmet allllll the way

Przemek 11-17-2006 05:33 AM

Sometimes at home, sometimes out... It depends on where I am when I'm hungry :D

fibble 11-17-2006 06:20 AM

Mom's home cooking will always be the best..!

greygoose 11-17-2006 06:25 AM

Home cooking, definitely. That is unless its sushi perhaps. I wont attempt to disrespect japanese by trying to make it myself. :upsidedow

I have to say living abroad sausages are one of the few things I miss from England.

There is even an English butcher here in Bp making English sausages and delivering them. He also supplies the Irish/Scottish/English pub-restaurants here.

I like German, Hungarian, Polish, Mexican, Spanish, French and Croatian sausages but the English ones are still the best for me.

djroof 11-17-2006 06:44 AM

always home made!

A GOOD British sausage is very good. I like a nice cumberland. However, there are so many types that are just bread filling to bulk it out. I understand the historical reasoning and having to be creative during meat rationing but I like more meat in sausages. I guess it is just a matter of what you grew up with in relation to what you crave when you are homesick :)

CamMaster 11-17-2006 07:50 AM

I prefer eating out, cause I live alone and I don't cook. :pimp

LittleSassy 11-17-2006 08:27 AM

i'd go for home cooking...i prefer a more customized food :)

NinjaSteve 11-17-2006 08:29 AM
