Value of Domain Names

so will the value of domain names just keep going up 5 years from now? i have a large amount of stock in Marchex (MCHX) and they own one of the largest domain name portfolios, and if domain names are going to be like real estate and just keep increasing in value in the future then i think i should make a pretty good profit in a few years. thoughts?

I like how Marchex is building out their domains and adding content to them, they are headed in the right direction.

Partly depends on how they are monetizing their domain portfolio, and on what happens with the tiered domain registration issue.

Noone can answer this question.

Overall domains are far more risky than real estate though.

If you own an apartment / house / building in a truly prime area, you simply KNOW there will be still huge demand for it in 30 years from now. And in case of domain names, noone knows if they will even exist in 30 years from now. I obviously hope they will though, cause they are part of my business as well.

owning some good quality domain names can be cushion i assume, if their business model doesn't work out and the domains keep appreciating then they still making profits.

i honestly can't think what would replace a domain name when trying to find a website..

For the next 5 years Im pretty sure you should make a profit, 10+ years though I have no idea how the domain market will work

I agree, but you know, with technology changes, you have to be a little humble (?) and just acknowledge that noone can predict what will happen.

In the past people would say that nothing will replace horses and then cars were invented :upsidedow

Could be a decent investment.

Exactly.
I noticed at the Moniker.com live auction at TRAFFIC East some of the domains in the 50-200K range came with a matching 800# - clever value added strategy :winkwink:

To take a value domain is best to see what's happening in world, for example one someone who could be fameous take domain with his first and last name so you could sell it for a lot of monies later.

Changes in IE7 and Firefox may start a run on International Domain Names next, for those of you into real speculation...

We cover this developing issue in the December KlixxxCEO :)

.COM prices have been going up for 20 years now

I dont see any reasons for this to change.

If we could predict things like that we would all be billionaires.
