damn, i occasionally use 56k when i am stuck out on my families ranch, and i can't believe just how fucking slow it really was. i can't even check my email without wanting to fire the keyboard right through my monitor. i remember back in the day when i would set 20 songs to download, and leave my computer conected ALL NIGHT, just so i could burn a cd the next morning. and i thought GFY was slow now...

BV 11-16-2006 06:15 AM

I'm so used to this 1MB/10MB RoadRunner I almost feel the same way when I'm out and have to use one of those cheap dsl lite connections.

biftek 11-16-2006 06:38 AM

*shudders* dialup , ah they were the days , having to check and double check to make sure you really wanted that download before you wasted those hours getting it down , in the middle of a download and then the phone rings cutting you off

fun times

StarkReality 11-16-2006 06:41 AM

I had to use it 2 months ago (for 3 days) when my cable fucked up...I thought, it wouldn't be that bad, but it was a nightmare.

Kimo 11-16-2006 05:22 PM

dial up was nuts

Dagwolf 11-16-2006 05:27 PM

An hour to download a 5 MB file. I don't miss it... (I think that was a 1200 baud modem, might have been 2400)

Axeman 11-16-2006 05:29 PM

56k was a luxury, started on a 14.4k modem before getting to upgrade to 28.8 when the option was available.

OG LennyT 11-17-2006 06:25 PM

Spunky 11-17-2006 06:47 PM

Only when the dsl goes on the fritz..thankfully not very often

bl4h 11-17-2006 07:00 PM

it is a nightmare. My worst memory of the experience is the "CLICK" sound of your modem losing connection

I remember aol warez
I remember getting pinged/icmp and diconnected whenever you pissed someone off
i remember using netzero when it was free and ad based
I remember when sending ATH0++ disconnected your modem (typing it something in a post or in a chatroom would disconnect everyone)
i remember watching images load pixel by pixel, line by line

bad memories :Oh crap

have been on 12mb for a few years now

Yep, that's what reminded me of this. I was excited to get internet on my cingular 8125 but to wait really makes it pointless. I need high speed on my phone

minusonebit 11-18-2006 07:34 PM

I'd rather sit on a 56K connection any day than use fucking WiFi. Wireless networks are absolutely fucking useless.

Sly 11-18-2006 07:34 PM

I remember the first day I had the Internet.

Couple of us gathered around the computer, found a site dedicated to Pamela Anderson with probably 20 pictures. We let the computer sit there and download those 20 pictures, took the whole afternoon. Once loaded, we opened up every picture and added it to Favorites.

This was on a P1 133mhz mind you, cutting edge!
