half true. religion was created as and continues to be an instrument for controlling the masses. his idea that it's a subconscious creation is an oversimplification. maybe this is one of the reasons it works, but surely not the only one.

as difficult as it seems to admit this - humanity has grown a bit in the last 2000 years - we've simply realized there are better ways of doing things for the sake of the whole (and everyone can feel the positive effects of this, although even today the setup benefits the powerful more than the poor).

you can never be void of purpose, if you know what the real puspose is - and that's to be happy with your life and yourself. as cliché as this is, a good loving family of your own, and some good friends will fill any void. of course, not everyone understands that. it's always the small tings that make the most sense in life.

evil has, yet again, been been sharpened and redifined for the masses. nothing has changed. when you talk 'we've' you're certainly aren't addressing a large chunk of the world who thinks differently.

The is some scientific evidence to support the theory that there is a area in our brains that triggers the 'God Belief' - the euphoria, hope, and sense of a greater power that religion brings may in fact be, in some part, biological in nature and if that's true then religion would be just a natural occurance of this reacton within our brains - virtually every society on earth has some sort of religion, which points strongly to a biological orgion for the behaviour.

this isn't to say that religion isn't used to controll society, quite the opposite. It points towards using religion for controll as similar to mind controll by narcotics or hypnosis.

religion is a tool for making small people happy with their small lives and preventing them from destructing themselves and others (rich people in particular). it is only when the basic instincts step into play (like hunger) when religion fails to fulfill its purpose - and hence all the revolutions - france, russia, etc. give them "bread and circuses" and things will be ok - kind of like how things work today.

not the point. you said it was a half truth, and you were wrong. the quote only address pyschological weakness, not the entire theory of his with regard to religion. in fact, religion is control - control that preys apon pyschological (and other) weaknesses.

i meant to point how widely spread the word offended is nowadays and how everybody pretends they care about other people's feelings. as much as i hate this word and what it stands for, there is a positive connected to it - humanity has evolved in the last couple of hundred years and the world is a better place as a whole - at least in the privileged areas.

This post is not a dis on quiet or other dudes who dig on Nietzsche and his ilk.:

Nietzsche is overrated. As much as his apologists try to whine it away, The Will to Power led to Hitler and the Nazis. Although they perverted the concept of the Ubermensch, they captured the notion of Will To Power--the world is divided between the strong the weak. It is the weak's destiny to either morph into the strong or be consumed by it. This is very Western [logic of dichotomy -- good/bad, left/right, black/white] and ignores the fluid nature of human beings and nature itself. Joseph Campbell may be on to something when he categorized The Will to Power as a step to reaching full awareness. It is, in of itself, not the final destination.

everybody has their opinions and the good thing about this board is that you can find people to talk to even about things like philosophy.

anyway - quiet, last night i was too sleepy to read your posts thoroughly, man - missed a couple of ideas there. doesn't matter - i still enjoyed the thread and maybe next time there is a philosophical debate i'll be awake ;)

i always have to laugh when i hear comments like this. a couple of things:

(1) the guy died in the year 1900.
(2) he had a outspoken hatred of racism (including anti-Semitism) as can be seen in many of his writings/letters throughout his life.
(3) his unpublished work was edited by nazis at the time they rose to power.

you can take quotes from the bible (for example) to argue for or against anything you like. saying Nietzsche was a proto-nazi is imo, laughable. He was clearly not racist. one of the basic points is that you should not be held back from reaching your potential - racism goes against that ideal.

actually, ideas like:

- having to create your own purpose (as there is no all-encompassing purpose)
- there is no truth
- good and evil are relative ideas

are the anti-thesis of traditional Western thinking. they are also (in large part) the basis of existentialism. as well as being reflected in current post-modern theory. of course you have to read all of Nietzsche, and decide for yourself what is genius, and what is bs - keeping context in mind :) thinkers such as Sartre, Derrida, Foucault, Baudrillard and countless others have done just that. this is getting kind of gay... ultraquiet AT mac.com
