Avoid GoDaddy at all costs, at all costs I repeat!

I have to admit that in my younger years I fell for the hype and registered a domain or two with GoDaddy. Only now I'm on the other end of the domain business spectrum, I've come to realise that GoDaddy is a terrible registrar, truly one of the worst (if not the worst) out there...

A few of their tactics to keep domains with them:
- No transfers away possible when whois data is shielded
- No transfers away possible for 60 days after any change to the domain - think registrant contact, nameservers (?), just anything you can imagine

They feature the most extensively cross-sale filled checkout process in the business (but Moniker comes close!).

They're not even cheap!

I beg you, please register your next domain with a decent registrar! It would make life for everyone so much easier...

My recommendation: Fabulous.com

pimplink 11-13-2006 10:39 AM

Thank you for the warning. I'll keep this in mind.

Tanker 11-13-2006 10:40 AM

Ummm yeah you should use www.moniker.com only the best man

Himuro 11-13-2006 10:42 AM

I have to second that statement, GoDaddy is a big NO NO.

SmokeyTheBear 11-13-2006 10:42 AM

i have a few at gogdaddy , have been slowly moving them to others..

I like directnic.. fast simple never had any problems

gooddomains 11-13-2006 10:43 AM

godaddy been fine for me

CaptainHowdy 11-13-2006 10:43 AM

I have a lot of domains in GoDaddy :(...

Enema 11-13-2006 10:45 AM

The rule: "No transfers possible for 60 days after modifying a domain" is absolutely insane!

They also like to pass the buck and blame the other Registrar when they screw up a transfer.

Andiz 11-13-2006 10:45 AM

No shit sherlock.....

Dirty Dane 11-13-2006 10:51 AM

+ all the spam they send

Quagmire 11-13-2006 10:51 AM

I like goDaddy, but I'm just a porn surfer.

Horny Dude 11-13-2006 10:59 AM

DirectNIC.com and never worry again!

Klen 11-13-2006 11:06 AM

if you sell your domain to someone who uses another registrar, typically.

all of my domains are at godaddy too, i don't have a LOT.. 150 maybe. never had any problems.

DjSap 11-13-2006 11:12 AM

godaddy has been good to me...then again most companies that grow big eventually start sucking because they have to hire idiots who implement idiotic things...

Lance69 11-13-2006 11:32 AM

Registerfly is way worse IMO.

the alchemist 11-13-2006 11:33 AM

Is that really news or a 5 years old thread?

Martin 11-13-2006 11:35 AM

Been with GoDaddy for years. Aside from the BS they try to sell your during check out I've never had a problem. Even when selling a few domains.

StuartD 11-13-2006 11:48 AM

Been with godaddy for a long time now, sold some domains and stuff... never had any complaints.

Sly 11-13-2006 11:54 AM

Hmm... I've heard people saying this for years. I have over 700 domains with Go Daddy. Have never had any problems.

sexybabe 11-13-2006 12:03 PM

directinc is the way

czarina 11-13-2006 12:04 PM

I have a few with them, never had any problems with them... I do prefer namecheap.com though, but I've been too busy to transfer the domains to them.. I'll get to it one of these days.

King of Queens 11-13-2006 12:08 PM

I've used godaddy and they really suck big time imho.

I'm using http://www.namecheap.com & love them. No up sells, no spam , fast dns change + 1'st year who is protection is free & you can pay with paypal too if you want to.

The only time I've heard from them is when my who is subscription was going to expire once in 30 days.

They also have fast transfer if your selling a domain name & if your buyer want it even faster they can create a free account & you can push it him/her the same day & they can transfer it to where ever :pimp

donkevlar 11-13-2006 12:21 PM

I'm gonna cosign with you on this one. I had a small blog, just started so it didn't matter too much, missed the $4 billing because my paypal account was empty.

So I contact them TWICE asking them to extend it TWO days. They tell me theres nothing they can do, billing doesnt go thru, everythings deleted.

Customer lost.

donkevlar 11-13-2006 12:24 PM

Oh, forgot to mention. I did a search for a domain... nothing general, lets say it was something like stevensmithlawonline.com. It comes up as, available in the godaddy search.

So I find cheaper places that sell domains, look up the SAME domain, and its mysteriously "taken". Yet still readily available at godaddy...

Matt 26z 11-13-2006 12:26 PM

Most GoDaddy complaints are baseless. For instance, all the upsells at checkout. Try clicking the "quick checkout" link next time.

As for the no transfer if privacy is turned on, this is something ICANN needs to require. It's extra protection for everyone involved.

tenderobject 11-13-2006 12:33 PM

i love namecheap.

Kimo 11-13-2006 12:38 PM

namecheap isnt bad

NaughtyRob 11-13-2006 05:02 PM

godaddy.com rocks. Don't believe the bad hype.

Jon Clark - BANNED FOR LIFE 11-13-2006 06:27 PM

You should never register adult domain with a icann accredited register......

The 60 day thing is a icann rule..... btw

marketsmart 11-13-2006 06:29 PM

everyone knows godaddy sucks balls

get with namecheap :thumbsup

reviewcash 11-13-2006 06:53 PM

Each registrar has their own conditions ... we have to be prepared for that

Webmistress - Doreen 11-13-2006 06:55 PM

Lykos 11-13-2006 08:06 PM

~Ray 11-13-2006 08:08 PM

I've used parava since 2000 , they work fine for me

adultchica 11-13-2006 08:12 PM

Godaddy is not going to be at the top of the food chain forever, better ones will keep moving up

Dirty F 11-13-2006 08:15 PM

I use Godaddy and never had a problem. One time i fucked something up and they even gave me credit for future buys for something that was my fault

harvey 11-13-2006 08:17 PM

well, I use them and I've found they're doing some nasty stuff to avoid transfers, but I've more than 1000 domains with them, so guess thye'll stay there in the meanwhile

digifan 11-13-2006 08:19 PM

I trust directnic only.

Fabulous doesn't thrill me.

The company has attitude, and they are not even located in the US.

The only registrar I recommend is

http://www.moniker.com

:thumbsup

Godaddy is not that bad. I like that feature of not being able to transfer the domain away for a period of time, if the whois details are changed. That way, if one's account is compromised, the hacker can not change the administrative contact email on the domains and attempt to transfer them away. Although, I do think 60 days is a long period of time to have to wait. I think Godaddy should change that time frame to 30 days.
