english grammar question.

Hey, just wondering to myself again why after a comma (,) you leave a space? same for a fullstop. or anything peice of grammar point.

why cant we all write like this, its much better and would save alot more space.Plus makes more sense.

goodnight gfy!

but that was actully a serious question.

I think it's just easier for the eye to read.
Also, there is one space after a comma and two spaces after a period.
So you pause for a comma and a pause a bit longer for a period.

Ohface 11-11-2006 05:29 PM

Oooooook.Well, think about it.If you DO NOT leave a space after a "," the computer interpretes that the 2 words sepparated by your comma are just one word. This could lead to some bad arrangement of text. It's not obligatory but it's quite recomended.

Thumbler 11-11-2006 06:28 PM

I think we should start all new sentences with a capital (as opposed to a capitol LOL)

Dirty Dane 11-11-2006 06:30 PM

all sentences should end with a capitaL.

polish_aristocrat 11-11-2006 06:44 PM

I agree, I don't know where that one came from. Not to mention that it's a full stop in English, only the Americans call it a period.

scottybuzz 11-12-2006 02:13 AM

huh? i thought it was only one space after a full stop!

rigrunner 11-12-2006 03:07 AM

It's about computer interpretation when typing, one space after a comma or semi colon, two spaces after a full stop. When actually writing (do people do that anymore?) it's about having a pause in speech/thought so a space aftewards is the natural way to follow the text.

AsianRain 11-12-2006 06:37 AM

Readability - whether writing or typing, a space allows the mind to pause between sentences and separate items.

reynold 11-12-2006 06:43 AM

I guess it's formal writing. Single space for comma (,) and double space for period (.). :)

shekinah 11-15-2006 05:29 AM

Happens when the person still thinks or wants to have a pause while writing.

stef_girls18 11-15-2006 05:31 AM

I never understood some of the grammar rules

luvlyn 11-15-2006 05:39 AM

it helps for proper reading!

Klen 11-15-2006 05:44 AM

It normal thing in english grammar. Some people write without space and with demand from where he is it.Plus microsoft office automaticly add space during spell check.

Ace_luffy 11-15-2006 05:47 AM

that's normal for english grammer :)

greygoose 11-15-2006 05:48 AM

I think it kind of works as a pause after a sentence. Like this. :)

notabook 11-15-2006 05:50 AM

single space after a period/full stop is fine. It really doesn't make much of a difference. See? It really don't lol.

Sarah_Jayne 11-15-2006 06:26 AM

I leave two spaces after a period. That is because that is how I was taught to do it in typing class in school.

ADL Colin 11-15-2006 08:15 AM

A sentence should always end with ellipses ...

4Man 11-15-2006 09:59 AM

Just do it how you want

E$_manager 11-15-2006 10:39 AM

No, i never thought it is a good idea.
Perception is better the way we write it now.
