I think most webmasters work day jobs, because I get way more submissions between 6 pm to 11 pm, when people get home from work.

Everybody had a day job at one time or another. I used to deliver pizza at Papa John's. Booya!

mike503 07-11-2002 07:47 AM

i'm a web developer by day. web developer by night. web developer by late night.

i hardly sleep because i'm always thinking about my own shit. reason is, my day job takes up a good chunk of my day so whatever is leftover is my time to do my own shit.

if i could just dump the day job... anyone want to help?

I'm sorry, I have trouble believing anyone at Freenetpass was ever qualified to deliver pizza. LOL just kidding

I used to work 12 hour shifts in a styrofoam cup factory with 150 people who spoke no english. It was about 130 degrees in there and the noise level was way off the scale. I packed bags of cups into boxes all fucking night from 7PM to 7AM. It was hell.

Its been about 3 or 4 years since ive done that and i still get a shive up my spine whenever i see a styrofoam cup.

RATBOY 07-11-2002 08:22 AM

I can't beat the cheese packing, but accounting is seriously wearing me down. I need to start doing subcontracting work. Anyone need work done with image manipulation? I work CHEAP.

Here's my sucky day job story...

In highschool, I worked for a mid-size pretty high-tech manufacturer. I was an extra IT guy, basically-- The high school kid who gets the crap work. Plus, I handled all their Macs. Anyhow, it was a pretty good job. As time went on, I worked summers when home from college, and eventually got phased out. For a while, I did contract work to support their Mac people, and then someone decided they had a large service provider who could do that, so they phased me out again.

Then, the summer after I finished my MA, I ended up working with them again. I just really needed a job. So, with my shiny new MA in Philosophy, I took a job on the second shift. I was packaging consumables. Basically, I took thousands of metal widgets, put rubber bands around them, and stick them in boxes. Then I put the boxes in bags. And put those bags into boxes. And put them on shelves. Later I moved them to other shelves.

I wouldn't have minded the job so much, I guess, as a short term thing... but the timing just sucked.

"Hi, I used to make $10 an hour here in IT. Now I have a Masters degree. What do you have available?"

"Want to make $8 an hour working the night shift packaging widgets?"

:BangBang:

At least now I live off of my sites and photography.

Beastiepoo 07-11-2002 08:50 AM

I do Special Effects for the movie industry. I work in a high profile shop. We work on films with budgets of about 120 - 180 mil. Friday (tomorrow) is my last day. I can't wait to leave this place.

It will be my last day in the movie business, and I'm really looking forward to moving on.

TheFLY 07-11-2002 10:08 AM

Redshoe -- hmm I guess I could say congrats! ;) Hopefully we can get a trade going here soon...

Ever thought of doing special effects for the porno industry?
LOL...

Switch to prostitution. This way you can pay some bills, and actually keep a few :2 cents: for yourself. Oh, and did I mention, you can have some fun in the process too.

Kind of long...

I used to work as CSR for At&T, for the broadband @home cable modem service.

They work you like a robot there. I got employee of the month right when I left though. hhehehe. My supervisor couldn't stand me for some reason. Maybe it was because I gave out great customer service, and went above and beyond to help the customer out. We got in trouble if we did things that another department handled.

For example, provisioning modems. 99% of the time, the modem info was in the program already, I literally just had to click on a button. We weren't allowed to do that though, that had to be forwarded to the TASC department, which was always overworked, and normally had a 1 month wait on a sent ticket for a provisioning.

I knew agents there, so when a customer called in because "my modem isn't working, it hasn't ever worked, and I have been waiting for two months for it to work!!! and then I find out that their account was transferred to TASC before once or twice, but lost in the pool, I would take pity, call a friend in TASC, ask them if i could, "click the button" after double-checking their modem serial # over the phone. I was always told, "yes".

It was great, tell the customer, "keep checking your internet connection, it should come up here within 5-10 mins", then put them on hold, and click the provisioning button. Then browse the internet for 5 mins.

When you come back, you have them literally weeping they are so happy. "Thank you! it's been MONTHS, ive talked to 10 people, you were the only one who could help me! thank you!!!!" Then credit them for 2 months, and you got a loyal, and happy at&t customer, and word of mouth is one of the best forms of advertising.

Of course.... I wasn't allowed to click on the provisioning button at all, always pissed my supervisor off, even though I always got permission from the people in the right department beforehand, every time. He told me not to do it anyway, but I ignored him. I figured doing my job as a customer service agent superseded his idiotic reasoning. He made work hell for me though. Listened in on most of my calls, nit-picked at me.

I laughed my ass off when I got employee of the month. My supe didn't even tell me, it was all of the people I worked with who mentioned it to me. That's when I decided to quit. I was sick of it.

Not to tug my own boat or anything, but I think At&t loses their valuable employees by being too "corporate".

I like my job now much better. :)

Good luck to everyone else on getting into the porn biz full time!

Talking about sucky jobs? Beat this one:

I worked for some oil companies, one of them Halliburton, which is currently in the news because it was (mis)managed by vice President Dick Chenney.
My job was to put several tools inside the oil well and take measurements of physical properties, like resistivity, porosity, radioactivy, etc, so as to tell if there was petroleum, which depth it was, how much, etc.
An ordinary job, if everything was OK, lasted 24 - 36 hours. The rental of an oil platform is very expensive, so, once the oil well is assigned to you, you are not supposed to stop working until you finish (I had to eat, wash, sh*t, etc in short non official breaks); take a break to sleep was inconceivable.

Then, at this one job, I flew in Sunday afternoon (the platform was 150 miles off Brazilian coast); I started checking my stuff, Sunday night the well was turned over to me; Monday night, the tools get stuck close to the bottom of the well and I had to start a fishing job (*I* was responsible for the job, had to be awaken all the time) which lasted 24 hours; tools get out, I have to check them all over again; I was close to finishing the job, my base didn't want to send someone to relieve me (helicopters are paid by the flight, and are expensive); Wednesday afternoon, the tools get stuck again (now, even if paid, helicopters wouldn't fly out, for security reasons); I had to take another fishing job until Thursday morning, when someone came to help me.

Can anybody imagine that? From Sunday through Thursday, not allowed to sleep (until 48 hours, you feel sleepy, but after that you just walk and talk like a zombie), several big dicks asking what YOU are doing to their US$ 100 million well? That's what I call a sucky day/night job.

If anyone found this job interesting, they always have openings for young people. Go to
Schlumberger and
Halliburton
and check out the wireline jobs section.

I've mostly done clerical work but that could involve numerous things in numerous situations.

I spent most of my working life as a temporary clerical worker. since I can type 85-100 wpm and I knew all of the microsoft office software, I would just get temporary desk jobs. I've been in Law firms, consulting firms, coca-cola, post office, telemarketing, an oil firm, federal government, advertising agencies, hospitals...along with doing low level day labor where you get paid by the day. One time, I was assigned to shovel the horse shit in the stables at a nearby racetrack. I've had a job where I was to stand at the top of this chute and use a big wooden stick to shove this powdered resin to the bottom where somebody else bagged it.

I've worked at Burger king on the Whopper boards where they had me working like a slave. especially once when Mc Hammer and his crew came through ordering up 5 whoppers each and other shit, taking one bite of their food, and leaving it out on the tables in the dining room for me to then clean up.

I've been a bartender at bars in the ghetto where cheap muthafuckas collect change to buy a budweiser, leave no tip, and then try to tell me how I should pour their beer better and other tips on how I can improve my bartending services. Of course I had to start skimming cash and I got promptly fired due to the registers not matching.

I've worked in a stripclub where it was my job to make sure that nobody touched the girls. I got fired because I was falling asleep.

I used to work at Sabarros pizza place where I THOUGHT that I would get something to eat since I worked there. But even though I was getting paid hardly anything, and even though I MADE the pizza, I would still go home with my stomach grumbling..They would make us sell every piece and would rather throw away the pizza than let us eat it. WTF!! Once we snuck some pizza..It was half eaten...that little white lady saw the pizza and threw the shit in the trash..I should have cussed her ass out.

And there are numerous instances where you have to constantly "look busy", even though there CLEARLY wasn't anything to do. I swore that trying to "look busy" was harder work than actually being busy. If there isn't anything to do right now, why the fuck can't I just sit there and chill?? Is it a crime that I'm chillin for 15 minutes at my desk? Nobody has a problem when the boss comes in 2 hours late with his jogging shorts stuck up his ass.

At my last job that I got fired from, I was a secretary at a wealthy consulting firm. So we always went to good restaurants for lunch in downtown Washington, D.C. I don't care if the big boss ordered a coke, I made sure to order a double shot of johnnie walker black (or blue of they had it) and I always purchased the most expensive shit on the menu even though I was the lowest paid employee there. You know that you are below your potential when you are schooling the higher paid consultants the differences in Scotch Whiskey.

All I know is that internet porn has allowed me to walk around with a swagger and holding my nuts. I can tell anybody I want to kiss my black natural ass. I made sure to email a lot of my old coworkers, including the bosses who fired me, a message telling them how much more I'm making doing the very thing that got me fired from the job, looking at porn on the computer. All of them know my website, are still stuck in their cubicles making chump change, and they get to watch me make more mothafuckin money each and every month right there on their desktop at work and they can't do a damn thing but shake their head. LIFE IS SWEET!

And my last day of working a 9-5 job is the beginning of next month. At which time, I will be flying to a now unnamed caribbean island, renting a condo on the beach, and shooting fine native women sucking my dick for content. Then I'm going to email my old coworkers a picture of me on the beach with the palmtrees in the back and two fine big booty hoes next to me and with my middle fingler stuck up.

The Lord has truly smiled on me.

Let's see worsed job....

I worked as a waitress in a lot of bars in Minneapolis, worked as a realestate agent, went to college got a dree in the medical field, moved to New Mexico, got transfered, got laid off, work as an assistant administrator, hmmm then decided fuck it, I either make money being self employed or I starve.... Have never looked back.

One thing I have realized is that you never become self employed unless you just do it. There is never a perfect time and there is never enough money.

so if you hate the job and want to be on your own, go for it. it all works out. Believe me, it is a lot of work but all is good.
