Fake YouTube video players have begun popping up on MySpace this week, trying to con users into downloading adware. What’s more surprising (or perhaps unsurprising) is that they’re distributing software from Zango, the adware company that just agreed to a $3 million settlement over its unfair and deceptive adware installations.

...the security firm Websense spotted fake YouTube players on MySpace profiles, with a link to “Yootube.info”. The fake player is actually a static image, usually showing a girl in a provocative position - clicking anywhere on the image takes you to the fake video site. Once you’re there, you’re faced with a Windows Media Player video and a prompt to install software to view the clip. Agree to the license, and you’re installing setup.exe from Zango Cash. Zango say that because you’re asked to approve a license, the installation method isn’t deceptive - however, the fake YouTube players do seem to be.
