TexasDreams - step inside please!

TD - Are you guys doing some maintenance on the site or something? I just clicked on a link and it took 67 seconds to load the page. Is this a problem that you guys are working on or is this something I should take up with my ISP? The only site I visit daily that gives me any troubles is GFY. Why would Time Warner Cable give me a problem when I load GFY and not with any of the other sites that I visit on a daily basis?

Seems fine to me! Took all of two seconds to open up this thread.

It is happening in spurts. At times for me lightning fast and then wham I can etch a stone tablet and send it pony express to you guys and it seems it would be faster.

MikeVega 11-08-2006 09:34 PM

it has been slow on and off all day .. at his moment it seems ok ..

lazycash 11-08-2006 09:35 PM

Its been off and on all day and pretty much every other day. Maybe we could start a donation thread for additional servers since there seems to be donation threads for everything else. I frequent some mainstream forums that have far more traffic than gfy and their pages load instantly.

MaddCaz 11-08-2006 09:35 PM

always has tho really

MyNameIsNobody 11-08-2006 09:37 PM

GetBigCash 11-08-2006 09:37 PM

Hey Rich - that's great for you. But for me - it sucks :Oh crap

If it's a problem on my end - I'd like to know so I can get something done about it. If it's a problem on your end - it would be nice to know that as well. Either way, I'm thrilled that you have a great connection :thumbsup

Yea - I'm getting that as well. Any ideas what's up with that?

For me it's about 30/70. 30 percent of the time threads load ok and 70 percent of the time they lag considerably. If there's anyone who knows what the hell is going on - please let me in on it. If it's something that I can have looked at on my end I'll call my ISP and get them on it right away. I don't think it is on my end though since I don't have any issues surfing any sites except GFY :(

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 11-08-2006 10:23 PM

Upgrade from 56k... :thumbsup

It's killing the biz, I KNOW !!

xclusive 11-08-2006 10:35 PM

Same for me and there seems to be a slowdown overall when there are more than 4 or 5 contests on the main page. Bots maybe?

psili 11-08-2006 10:35 PM

Netcraft says GFY's running FreeBSD with Apache and PHP, so it's not a windows issue ( like myspace using windows and cold fusion).

My guess is this site gets so flooded with retarded posts that their software gets flooded with requests and can't handle / pool the load at times. I'm retarded, so I don't know if there's any PHP -> DB connection pooling software, but my initial guess would be a bottle-neck between PHP trying to open and close a limited number of connections offered by the DB backend.

Then again, I work for a company that redundant everything: oracle, mysql, customer farms, member farms, secure join farms and if someone fucks up a router setting all of it goes to hell. And I'm retarded on the whole subject.

So.....

TD -- Good for you man, for keeping this place running, even if people complain. I have no idea about being a sys-admin, but I'd think I'd rather sell flavored, shaved ice on a carribean beach. :)

jonesy 11-08-2006 10:44 PM

slow for ages

pocketkangaroo 11-08-2006 11:11 PM

I think it only happens when a contest gets close and you have a lot of bots and contest whores refreshing constantly. Whenever it happes to me, it always seems like a contest is on top.

martinsc 11-08-2006 11:14 PM

pretty slow for me lately....

Kimo 11-08-2006 11:29 PM

works fine for me

Ummm - was that supposed to be funny or something? Maybe you need to upgrade from acting like an immature little brat to acting like an adult...if you think that's possible! :321GFY

From time to time we do have problems. Many times it is due to new (never heard of) search engines that try to grab all 11-million GFY posts from dozens of IP's all at the same time. Sometimes it's backbone issues that are out of my control, as I'm a few hundred miles from the actual servers themselves. I'll blame it all on Al Gore, he designed shitty interwebs. :Oh crap

dougeetx 11-08-2006 11:47 PM

They might be getting ready for the upgrade. Vbulletin 3.6.3 just came out

Star 69 11-08-2006 11:49 PM

Sometimes GFY is too slow, right now working fine to me
