Domains that suck

I once read an article in the paper regarding the use of the word "sucks" in domain names ie www.kromesucks.com It stated that registrars were watching over the use of this more than any other word due to black mail type exploits. Basically people were purchasing domains like www.nikesucks.com putting up an anti Nike site - they were however being 100% cautious with regard to anything that would cause libel action - and then approaching - say Nike - and saying we will keep pushing traffic to this site and ruining your trademark unless you pay us x amount of money. The people doing this were only asking for $500,000 which is nothing is comparisson to the drop in value of the trademark if Nike had not got the site removed.

Is this a load of bollocks? :question

well its freedom of speech VS defamation of character

you decide

As soon as you say you would be doing it to ruin their trademark, you lose. That's way more than they would need to take the domain away from someone, as it is the main thing the ICANN will take domains away for... Trademark dilution.

..but that was the thing..these people were making out as though they were doing it because they were activists against these companies due to the companies exploiting people, polution whatever...the companies would usually contact them and offer them payment.

companies are now buying their own companysucks.com domain so people can't fuck with them.

If you set up the site and approach Nike asking for money to close down the site then you're gonna be in deep shit. I believe it's known as "blackmail".

And by definition, that's cybersquatting. By buying these domain names up (verizon has hundreds of them), these companies are preventing true criticism sites from getting them.

I found a really awesome site that discussed all this once, but I can't find it anywhere now. They talked a lot about PETA on the site too, if anyone wants to go hunting (no pun intended) for it.

Ok, I found that site I was talking about:
http://unquietmind.com/cybersquat.html

It's an interesting read.
