Stop it you Scumbags!

Record Industry to MP3 Downloaders: Stop downloading MP3s! It will make us lose money since we haven't figured out an alternative business model for online content!

Great article!

Frank W 07-10-2002 10:12 AM

I think its just a matter of time when music and video content will have a new business model.

At the least, it will force record companies to stop issuing CDs filled with filler and one or two good songs.

They sell a $2.00 cd for $17.00 and they want me to be nice to them??? LOL..... okay... sure.

Not to mention, collect all promotion/production fees from the artist. Check out Courtney Love's lawsuit.

darksoft 07-10-2002 01:08 PM

At their cost the CD runs around $1 not $2 due to volume. That extra $1 adds up...

how sad

You guys crack me up. You're the first ones to whine about freeloading surfers trading passwords to your paysites around.

mike503 07-10-2002 01:34 PM

fuck the RIAA.

music has been priced too highly for a while, they've been profiting forever. in fact a couple years ago they got forced to drop CD prices by the government..

fuck that shit. they need to get a business model online. i'd buy some music if it was priced per song or something.. not "oh i'll waste $12 on an album when i only want one song" - and i'm not spending $5 on a single so i can get the one song + three stupid remixes so they can charge me more.

:BangBang:

Theo 07-10-2002 01:40 PM

maybe i should sell them mp3-downloads.org to start a union.

Steve 07-10-2002 02:27 PM

The RIAA just needs to open a paysite - free trial, rebills at $45/month
:winkwink:

:1orglaugh That's funny!

I'm working some things out with a few labels now to change the biz model. I wish the micropayment systems were in place and functional. It would be a whole lot easier if it was easy to charge people smaller amounts like .99 and still make a profit. There are some other methods being looked at but that would be great. It's funny to me to see how much more advanced porn is compared to regular busineses when it comes to charging people for stuff made out of 1's & 0's !!

Anyone know anything more about micropayment's development?

I agree totally.

And another thing, Mercedes are a complete rip off as well so I'm just going to steal one them.

And have you seen the price of food in Luckys, that's criminal as well so I'm going to steal that as well.

But don't let me catch any of you taking my images without paying. :ak47:

Get real, stealing is stealing. The bosses of big corperations getting away with it does not make a wrong, right.

[Labret] 07-10-2002 03:10 PM

Fuck em.

How did that kid defeat the last big measure to stop people from ripping cds? A 99 cent permanent marker.

Now they have to resort to begging people?

They will never stop it. And they know it.

And as broadband becomes more available, it is only going to get worse.

Pornwolf 07-10-2002 03:13 PM

This is a case where both parties are wrong. The labels have been unjustifiebly charging people $12.98-$19.98 for items that are 900% cheaper to make than 15 years ago even though a full Vinyl L.P. was only 7.98. That's indirect theft. The people are outright stealing music but both parties are still wrong.

Now, if you wanna hear the worst part of it all listen to this...

Artists are paid an average of 12% of the wholesale costs of an album. Not a CD (which has a higher wholesale cost). So normally when a record is sold at wholesale cost to a store at $8.98 the artist is still getting paid as if it was a vinyl LP being sold at $5 so on average a new artist only makes about .60 cents a record which increases slowly with more albums sold. I don't even want to get into how much money the record companies take out for other stuff.

So in the end, artists are getting fucked both ways. What needs to happen now is for artists to figure out how to go directly to the consumer since the labels fucked up way of doing business is slowly ending. It could be good in the end.

But what I'm really saying is... don't sympathize with the labels!

Sleepy 07-10-2002 03:32 PM

If they want to hold the copyright laws to the letter then they are also going to have to offer some type of realistic user license. People are tired of buying the same songs over and over. CD's, tapes, records .. they all break very easily.

If all Mercedes broke every two years and could not be repaired Mercedes would go out of business too. Thats why they offer warranties.

The record industry is going to make less and they cant stop that. They raped their own market and should be glad they got what they did. Its time for realistic prices.

I guess we know who killed the spokesman for Napster. And they thought it was suicide.

Lensman 07-10-2002 04:13 PM

Interesting comments, if the RIAA members would just get off their asses and let us BUY downloadable music, people wouldn't have to STEAL it.

Morons.

it costs less than 50 cents to make a cd but thats not the point

Jon 07-10-2002 05:25 PM

the music industry can suck my big fat dick if they think im going to stop downloading music for free and start going out again and buying CD's.

If they were serious about controlling the problem.. they would take care of it. perhaps starting to sell mini-discs instead of CD's. this way you dont need to be careful of it getting scratched up so easily. sell them for cheaper too.

then again, as long as theres a free source to the downloadable music, the record industry wont be raking in as much cash as they used to. i know i wont pay $15 for a CD that takes 7 cents to make. i dont lose any sleep over rockstars that dont have enough cash to fund their new lambo or drug habit. boo hoo for them.

Sleepy 07-10-2002 05:29 PM

When Cds first came out the record industry charged $20.00 for them and about $8.00 for a tape. They said the price was due to the cost of the blank Cds. Now they get the Cds for less than a penny each and the price is even higher.

I was reading somewhere that they want to start a site where you can download music and pay per song. The amazing thing was that they wanted the mp3 to expire if you didnt pay your membership dues. Who wants to pay a monthly fee to listen to their favorite song ? Its not good enough to just pay them, they want you to pay them over and over.

I have no problem with buying mp3 from a record company. Its the best format, you never lose it, and it never wears out. The only bitch is I dont think the recording industry wants that. My guess is that a large part of their income depends on their product failing so you have to buy again. They also probably make alot of money by bundling one good song with ten lame songs.

If they would just offer a reasonable service they could probably make great cash off the net and from Cd sales. People thought free radio would kill the music industry too, but it didnt.

Are you buying the media or the songs on them?

Exactly! Unfortunately, the big record companies are afraid that if we are able to buy only the tracks that we like, they lose money on the normal package of 1 good song plus 10 "filler" songs.

Either that or just a failure of imagination re selling content online.

Frank W 07-10-2002 10:30 PM

There was actually an antitrust suit about that since all the major labels "coincidentally" were charging the same $ for CDs.
