designing myspace profiles, is this an untapped biz?

a friend of my boyfriends has a rap group and he's paying me $100 to do his myspace layout for him (everything custom made). I would have done it for a 6 pack of wine coolers lol :) I think myspace is so much fun and I love doing designs as it is, just was wondering if there's a market for this that I havent heard of yet or not.

:upsidedow

pocketkangaroo 11-02-2006 08:18 PM

I'd guess there is for high end stuff. Celebrities, musicians, politicians, companies, and so on that want to make a presence on MySpace. I don't know what kind of impact you'd have on the general population as the audience of Myspace may not be willing to fork over a ton of cash for a design when there are so many free layout sites out there already.

Bree thinks it is a good biz..........

ya I totally agree. I can see why big time celebs and such would want a nice custom layout but not just everyday people. You know what I found tonight (that I thought was rather funny), I started to flip through adult webmasters' myspace profiles, and nearly half of them didn't have ANY kind of layout. Just a white page with a bunch of text. I figured of all people, webmasters would have decked out profiles. I was wrong. :P

oh she does myspace profiles too, now? I knew she always did some design gigs on the side, but didn't know what else. Cool! :thumbsup

WiredGuy 11-02-2006 08:21 PM

I could see bands on there paying for it, but not many individual users.

I bet you would find that most webmasters don't have personal sites or personal blogs as well. I don't have either.

fallenmuffin 11-02-2006 09:05 PM

Untapped? Hardly, so many people offer profile designs and designers are offering their services. Mostly 15 yr olds with some limited PS skill but still the market has been around...

k0nr4d 11-02-2006 09:05 PM

I doubt theres much money in it. Like they said, musicians, dj's and what not, but not really much besides that. $100 to do a full design is pretty cheap. I dont think i'd turn on photoshop for that

Wizzo 11-02-2006 09:05 PM

I know someone who's making around 10k a month just on myspace designs... :pimp

wrongo.. most work I did on mine is a top 60 - that Baba is on coincidently(s?)

I dont put much effort into something thats not making me $$ I think other webmasters feel the same :2 cents:

Jace 11-02-2006 09:14 PM

I spent a little time making mine, there are a few tweaks here and there that I need to do, but overall I am happy with it

I would post it here, but I hate dealing with the idiots that wanna add me because they think I am their friend

TDF 11-02-2006 09:20 PM

12 year olds have better html skills than me when it comes to myspace:thumbsup

hydro 11-02-2006 09:22 PM

My cousin used to do them for $125 a profile which isnt bad but theres definately not that big of a market for it. The good thing is that he would add a little "designed by myspace.com/username" tag and was later hired by a local tv station to design and maintain the site. So its definately a good way to market your services while making some extra change.

donkevlar 11-02-2006 09:36 PM

I know a guy who does really sick myspace profiles for known rappers for up to $500.

This isnt him... but this is an example of a myspace profile worth paying for! http://www.myspace.com/citrusrecordings

Babagirls, get at me on icq I may need some artist profiles done if you're good.

MaddCaz 11-02-2006 09:38 PM

good deal...you should try it!

starpimps 11-02-2006 09:39 PM

Any advice for putitng my mainstream business on MySpace?
I'm just learning it now and dont know if I should put my actual business on it, or make a profile of a hot girl who says she loves my website.

What do people do? what works?

clickhappy 11-02-2006 10:23 PM

btw if you help me with some advice here I may hire you to design my myspace page lol
i hire designers pretty often

BlueWire 11-02-2006 10:24 PM

I'm afraid that most 16 year olds don't have the budget :upsidedow

We've done one for a fairly prominent client of ours. I'm sure things like MySpace will be used more and more for promotion and thus will open up opportunities for designers. But the only people with proper budget will be those who will actually use it for marketing purposes :2 cents:

CaptainHowdy 11-02-2006 10:51 PM

No untapped biz at all... Good luck with it tough!

There is barely any work done to that one. All it has done to it is a background image centered, and a flash movie added up top. ?

emthree 11-03-2006 12:47 AM

Its good buisness if you can rank.
There's a few out there allready.

baddog 11-03-2006 12:49 AM

I have only seen a couple profiles (if that is what they are called), and I always wondered how they came up with these designs

There are some awesome ones out there where they leave the banner so it won't get deleted and everything else is hidden by a div overlay with an image map with a shitload of slices. Fucking lot of work in PS and CSS. I can't remember the best ones I've seen but here's one made like AIM

ForteCash 11-03-2006 01:51 PM

Yes, theres huge untapped potential on myspace :thumbsup

Winterhunter 11-03-2006 01:53 PM

A lot of rappers are out sourcing their profiles, I was parting with Trick Trick last night and he said his cousin runs his completly and he doesn't even know how to add pictures to it.

businesses and people will pay for anything, as many of them don't know the first thing about setting up a web page. Our local promotional company charges $50 for a basic myspace page, or 100 for a (1 page) hosted site. :thumbsup

Why do something that's already being done for free? Do a search for "myspace help" and find lots of designs being given away for free. With a handful of minor modifications..... bam - something no one else has.

I just started up warpmyspace.com the other day.

CyberHustler 11-03-2006 11:47 PM

my wife's been doing that since around april of this year. It isn't untapped but there are millions upon millions of opportunities. If you make a nice profile for yourself then one of your friends will see it and want you to do theirs. Then their friends, and their friends, and then ADDER ROBOT!

Because the ones being given out for free arn't actual designs. It's just modifying the styles of tables and borders. The good pages are actual designs that take alot of time and effort to make. There is a big difference in the ones being handed out for free (simple css style modifications) and the ones being done for money (actual full page layouts hacked over myspace's profile pages).

It's the same thing with normal website design. There are plenty of sites and programs out there that offer free web templates. However you still have people paying for design.
