MMORPG players: what kind of setting would you like to see?

There's MMORPGs for super heroes -- City of Heroes, etc.

Tons of fantasy MMORPGs -- everquest, guildwars, WoW, UO, etc etc.

There's space MMORPGs like Star Wars galaxies, etc

Besides these, what kind of setting for an MMORPG would you PERSONALLY like to see implemented?

Westerns? Martial Arts-based settings? Samurai/Bushido?

detoxed 10-30-2006 11:28 PM

dating, with a map of the US.

I think there's versions of these already. Using avatars, I believe.

Post-apocolypytic, Road Warrior style!

studiocritic 10-30-2006 11:43 PM

Right on. Basically an MMORPG version of Gamma World? See http://www.swordsorcery.com/gammaworld/ I used to play Gamma world when it was still published by TSR back in the 80s. Cool game. Another killer title they had was Rasmussen's "Top Secret".

Mr Pheer 10-30-2006 11:44 PM

Pirates!!!

fuck man, everybody knows that Pirates kick ass. And if you dont want to be a pirate, then be a privateer pirate hunter or merchant. Or be in the British navy.

Pirates rule... ok this is your idea, topic closed.

Pirates. Cool setting. Basically, I see players building hide outs. Trading. Contraband.

Maybe divide the world into 2 factions: GOVERNMENT AUTHORITIES vs. PIRATES. Or can pirates blast each other? Or maybe make it a free for all.

Another thing: customizable ships. Also players building their own Shipyards or becoming equipment makers. So instead of being a pirate or pirate hunter, you build, research, and sell stuff to the other players

thats the merchant part

pr0 10-30-2006 11:52 PM

The real world...with every neighborhood down the the last pixel, from satellite imagery.

Think Grand Theft Auto

Many of these elements can simply integrate the WOW template of equipment/raw materials, upgrades, factions, in game commerce, and skills/professions sets.

One pattern I notice with this type of game scenario is that there's a limit re "scalability"

Bdiddy 10-31-2006 02:34 AM

I like the pirate idea...but I think you could start with x number of islands and those are the reaces....then when people build better ships, you can add new islands and races as the game grows...

teksonline 10-31-2006 02:44 AM

I don't really care, the only thing i care about is to stop making them like they are now... A bunch of whining 15 year olds made em turn all MMORPG's into heaps of boring gayness, because of chinese gold farmers, LOL

now all games suck because they can't have an economy

LET THE FUCKING CHINESE FARM, THEY NEVER BOTHERED ME
AND QUITE FRANKLY I NEVER EVEN SEEN ONE

I see. So the world "grows" with the experience of the participants.

teksonline 10-31-2006 03:06 AM

there is a pirate mmorpg, rather old but still somewhat entertaining...called world of pirates i believe, you can play for free, for xx time, then its like one time charge of 15 bucks

and i believe another really big 3d type pirate mmorpg is in the works

I just saw that "world of pirates" one. Interesting. You're right, it's somewhat of an "earlier" generation re look and feel.

pornpf69 10-31-2006 04:39 AM

I never played it...but everytime I see people talking about it I get more tempeted to buy it!!

Wiggles 10-31-2006 05:23 AM

Lord of the Rings one is in the works I hear.

Sultry_Selenia 10-31-2006 05:30 AM

A Rifts based mmo would be hot. :) Although now I want to go check out that Pirates game you mentioned..

Please post links re RIFTS

Sultry_Selenia 10-31-2006 05:41 AM

It's been a long long time since I've played in that setting, but I always liked it more than DnD. Official site: http://www.palladiumbooks.com/ and Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rifts_%...laying_game%29

But prepare for it to suck if you're talking about the one Turbine is working on. They had a great MMORPG called Asheron's Call 2 but they mismanaged it so badly they had to shut it down last year. Creating the world is only half the job for an MM game to be successful. You also need content that adapts and grows as the players progress.

I love the Samurai idea. You could have an emperor controling the various clans, corrupt govt. (think Last Samurai), geishas, honor systems, ninjas, etc...

revolte 10-31-2006 05:48 AM

Western MMORPG with a cool economy system and nice 3rdperson shooter elements!

Bozena X 10-31-2006 06:37 AM

Ever Played Planetside??? That game was TIIGHT, there needs to be another first person shooter mmorpg, or i guess mmofps. I just think its not fun to put your guy on auto stab for 10 minutes while your trying to kill a slime beast. I like fast paced action, with an rpg style, that is fukin fun stuff.....

Lord of the Rings online....

I'm playing it right now...

Can't talk about it being in closed beta (NDA) and all that
but you can signup for beta access and hopefully get picked at

bl4h 10-31-2006 06:57 AM

grand theft auto type deal

A modern day cops and robbers

Police vs gangs (be it thugs or mafia) for territorial control of a city

tranza 10-31-2006 07:09 AM

WTF is MMORPG?

teksonline 10-31-2006 07:13 AM

massive multiplayer online role playing game

drjones 10-31-2006 07:18 AM

Anarchy Online was a cool concept, but done pretty poorly. Someone needs to take that concept and do it better.

Cyberpunk type settings, like a William Gibson novel.

This is so true. Basically it's a tightrope act between a tight story line and scalability and an 'evolving' gameplay

Libertine 10-31-2006 02:35 PM

Dystopic intergalactic science fiction.
FPS gameplay for battles, using mainly (or only) ranged weapons.
Upgrades consist of (bought) better guns, armour, walking speed, etc
Different servers are different planets/asteroids/whatever.

OR

Vampires. 19th century universe. Characters start as humans, then can become vampires (by getting infected), vampire hunters, werewolves, etc.

DirtyDreamer 10-31-2006 03:27 PM

Horror erotica ala Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series.

Also, Weird western ala Deadlands would be cool too.

How about HP Lovecraft "Call of Chtulu" type of horror?

Nice idea and it is one of the most used mythos in liturature. Though it basically is just early to mid 1900's with monsters that either kill you or send you insane.

The deadlands idea is pretty good to. I really liked the appeal of that game when it came out.

Honestly though one I would love to see if it has not been done yet. The whole Warhammer 40k ordeal. It has it all. Common fantasy elements people are used to such as goblins, orks, etc. Sci Fi based with a tremendous supply of weapons allowing for the shooter types. Not to mention interplanetary travel; land, sea, underground, space combat all available. Full commerce abilities. And of course a dark side being Chaos.

i never knew so many of you played video games...

Isnt Disney going to go for a Pirate of the Carribean MMORPG? I remember reading something about this a few months back.

After Shock Media 10-31-2006 03:59 PM

As for my above post about 40k they have their own wiki project with better info. Just found it,

Agreed 100%, I've *always* fucking wanted that. I want to blow away "real" people.

Blow off steam, etc.

Another thing that comes to mind VAN HELSING type scenario

LittleMack 10-31-2006 08:13 PM

when time allows I play Entropia Universe, has a $1,000,000,000 real world economy and huge world.

Mr. Marks 11-01-2006 06:22 AM

An online version of GTA would OWN its competitors.
