How environmentally aware are you in your life?

Environmental issues is at the top of the news agenda in the UK today. That got me thinking about how environmentally aware the average person is these days and how willing we are to adjust our lives. For example, I don't drive so that must do something for my carbon footprint and I recycle whenever I can. However, if I am honest, no matter how much people are putting on the pressure about flying I am not going to stop it and I think lower priced flights have a cultural benefit that is often overlooked in favor of environmental causes. So, while I do care about the environment and I try to do what I can I know that in my own life I am not as willing to adjust things, such as flying, that I probably should do if I really want to make a difference.

How environmentally aware are you in your real life and what lengths are you willing to adjust your lifestyle to be more aware?

Mixed bag here.
I only recycle all that i do because the city makes it nearly a crime if I do not. I do however recycle aluminum, glass, and certain plastics on my own and do not use the city for it. Since the majority of recycling uses more resources than it saves.
I drive very little and when we do we group our locations all into one trip.
I compost material.
I am fine with flying, yet have a very big issue with how jets drive around on the run way wasting fuel. When they really should be towed around during taxi service.
I use no non natural fertilizers and no pesticides in my yard.

I eat organic and vegan 80-90% of the time, I have a hippie ride (36 mpg highway, 30 in town), I have an organic garden in my backyard, I wipe my ass with earth friendly toilet paper, I use the recycle cans, etc...

You'd think I was a complete hippie until you met me.

My general goal is being a person that uses less and creates more.

It just seems sensible to me and a nice way to go to sleep at night.
*Shit I'm about to break into song now.*

I neve throw trash out the window

I try my very best to recycle, I advocate recycling to others. I do not compost as I live in a condo and we are not set up for that right now. I don't drive, however, I take cabs and other car services. I never litter and will call others out on it. I try not to use any products that are not bio-degradable...I do what I can, although I am sure there is plenty more that I could be doing.

I try but I'm not very good at it - I don't drive over here, so I suppose that is a big thing.

Recycle!
No to plastic bags! (as much as possible)
Plant more trees.
Conserve water and electricity.

After Shock Media 10-30-2006 01:24 PM

Those that recycle, what all do you recycle and is it because you have to or do you think it helps?

sherie 10-30-2006 01:24 PM

Oh yes, I conserve water and electricity as well. Thanks Angie :)

I don't eat meat and eat mostly organic food.
I don't have a car.
I only heat my appartment when it literally freezes.

I do fly fairly often, though, and don't recycle much (nearly impossible where I live).

Irrum 10-30-2006 01:56 PM

I eat only organic veggies, no meat.
I recycle
I conserve electricy and water
I dont buy an products that can damage the ozone layer.
I carpool.

Conserve energy, only buy vehicles with good gas mileage, donate to environmental organizations, recycle, veggies.

I have recycled (paper, plastic, metals) since I was a kid, so it's just habit now. I drive a pretty efficient car and save gas when I can. I turn lights off when I'm not using them. I don't litter. What else can I do?

Oh, I suck. I drive SUVs, don't recycle (used to, but now the closest recycling place is 4 towns away), I use throwaway batteries, and because I have a lot of odd shaped bulbs (the round ones, which I hate, and flood/track lights), I'm limited as to the number of florescent bulbs I can use.

I have at least 20 1/2 cans of paint in the house that I can't figure out a geologically conscience way to get rid of :(
