What's the hottest programing skill set these days?

Back in the day (when I was a real person); I had the hottest programming skills on the market. I could go any where in America and land a job in 2 weeks between $40k and $50k. This was big money then!!

(showing my age) My skill set was:

COBOL, VSAM, CICS, JCL, VAX, VMS, TSO

I had a larger skill set but the above was all that mattered, infact only the first 4 of the set mattered.

What are the "Big Marketable" skill sets today?

Ahh come on. I would think that at least people looking to hire would claim what they were looking for as the hottest.

I have no clue, but AJAX and Ruby on Rails are both hot in the web development world.

I couldn't make heads or tails of this, maybe a programmer could.

RUBY ON RAILS guaranteed!!!!!! my brother is a programming geek and he has been preaching to me how powerful Ruby on Rails is since I first started talking to him about programming shit about a year ago...it's still a fairly new language but the scalability of it is insane

also, there aren't too many hosts that support ruby yet....but i am starting to see more and more..

I'll research this ruby on rails thing, but something tells me that this aint that hot.

Game programming skills is probably paying the biggest bucks but there is not going to be that many jobs all around the country like when COBOL was the shit.

AJAX...well, we all fucking use that but we don't know it.
It's just using XHTML(which is HTML with stupid fucking end tags on the <br> tag and shit like that), Javascript, CSS and some XML.
A monkey can learn XML!!!
I don't see any company scrambling for this shit. Just hire someone who is good in Javascript and they can learn the other shit on 2 weeks training.

Doesnt matter dude, by the time you learn several languages, the markets flooded and you have to learn something else to be more marketable.

or

The market gets flooded and all of a sudden you're laid off or pay is cut in half because now you are expendable.

Reasons I got out of the programming field......

Ruby on Rails from a programming perspective is frikkin excellent - you can do in 1 hour what it would take 1 day to do normally...

don't believe me - try writing a simple bloggin engine from the ground up with php - how long would it take you?

Try 15 minutes with RoR - have a look at this fantastic presentation on how simple RoR is to use:
RoR Take2

The tutorial also shows an excellent example of why Mac OS X is the programmers choice. xcode is just awsome.

Sorry, non-geeks wouldn't get it...
