I think my plasma is dying

The picture on my plasma is not what it used to be :l/ Seems the colours are a lot darker no matter how much I mess with brightness / contrast and other settings :o/

It must be 4-5 years old now and I watch it quite a lot maybe 4 hours a day or more so I'm guessing its fading out..

anyone had a plasma expire on them?

I do, 3 years. depressing considering what I paid for it back then. Time for LCD

"Now, there are varying degrees of phosphor ignition along the way (the same way a CRT fades). Dissipation begins the moment you turn the set on. After 1000 hours of usage a plasma monitor should measure around 96% of its original brightness, which is barely noticeable to the naked eye. At 15,000 to 20,000 hours the monitor should measure around 80% brightness, or to state is technically, 80% of the original phosphors (gases) are being ignited."

LCDs and DLPs have a projector bulb. You pay about $400 to replace the bulb and you're back in business. With plasma, its a sealed unit like a CRT so there is no way to recharge the gases.

good and bad news... Plasma is not so good as I thought.

Is LCDs more expensive? Then plasmas?

You're thinking an LCD projection TV... LCD TV's are flat the same as LCD monitors but less pixels usually.

That is so bad and very depressing for you.

Yeah, you're correct, I was thinking of the projection rather that the flat panel LCD. I haven't heard anything overly bad about them, but when I was looking at them last year I didn't like the ghosting. I would imagine the refresh rates have improved since then though.

Ultimately you always have to get out to a store and see the products. Its definately not something I'd buy over teh interweb without seeing it in real life first.

here ya go: Flat-panel LCD screen displays have a lifespan approaching 60,000 hours. The lifespan of an LCD display is generally longer than that of similar-sized plasma displays . . and this
