Can anyone help with a weird internet connection problem, can't log into some sites.

I came home this morning and found that I can't log into shemp.com, pichunter.com, al4a.com, sextracker.com, nastydollars.com or ars

but I can log onto persiankitty, paycounter, thehun, pinkworld, pornno.
using both ie and netscape

I have an aol account that I use, and using the same cable modem internet connection, I can log into ALL the sites no problem.

Any idea why I can't log into half my stuff normally, but I can when using an AOL interface?

I'm wondering if my isp (attbi) is starting to filter content or something.
Or if the connection went down overnight and maybe their servers are re-sinc with other servers dns databases.

It happened to me one time. About 50% of the sites I normally visit were down.
(including google, excite, altavista)

Weird, but after a day or so everything was back to normal.
I called my ISP tech support and couldn't explain the problem.

Are you on a network?

Marcus 07-07-2002 08:07 AM

oh ok cool
if it cleared up for you it'll problably clear up for me.

I'm not on a network, I'm on a home cable modem

I'm on ADSL. No network.

I had a similar problem on my DSL network but after changing some registry settings it worked fine.

what probably happened was your isp had its cache servers messed up, and did not resolve the domains properly. Happens once in a while, and this would explain why the next day everything was working

do u have a internet filter on??

Marcus 07-07-2002 08:40 AM

now if I log into, say, sextracker.com in aol, i can then log onto it in ie, but if I close out of it in aol and try to refresh it in ie, it doesnt load up.

weird.

I dont have a filter on that I know of.
And I dont know anything about the registry (w2k) and dont want to mess around with it if i'm not sure what to look for.

If you're on cable it shouldn't be a problem.

Just wondering, what was the problem? And how'd you fix it?

Dont know what the problem was and it just fixed itself. :)

I think that one of attbi's dns servers was down, and their other dns server was up, that would be why I could get some websites and not others. and that would explain why I could get to some sites through aol but not attbi.

Maybe someone's trying to tell ya somethin'.

This is/was (since it's seem to have been fixed) most likely a router problem. Once for nearly two weeks I couldn't access my own FTP area because of a fucked up router somewhere (or that's the explanation UUNet gave me). UUNet was also pretty rude: Their attitude was, "We're working on it, and don't bother us: You're not one of our customers, you ISP is. Complain to your ISP." Well, it's like a taxi rolls up onto your foot and the driver ignores your complaints because "you're not my fare, the guy in the back seat is. Talk to him, not me."

All of which raises another issue. I THOUGHT the whole idea behind the Internet was originally that if any part of it was down, messages would be rerouted around the problem areas. WTF is wrong, then?

isp cache

I have a problem too, but it's with my connection ...Perhaps someone can help? :(

I have a MAJOR problem with my cable connection, I have to reboot my PC at least 30 times before I can get a connection. It always says "There is no connection currently available. Please
press work offline if you would like to work offline" or some junk like that. I cannot ever renew my ip because I always get an eror "DHCP server is not available", and I even tried unplugging the cable modem and cords for 10 min and plugging everything back in and sometimes it works, sometimes not. I called Roadrunner tech support MANY times and they just make me d0 all the stuff I just mentioned. I know that if I re-star my pc I'm gonna have a hard time getting online again :( Does anyone know what is wrong?

Bump :(

I bet you its what i mentioned earlier - isp cache thats why it fixed itself

But I've had this problem for almost 2 week already since I had
cable installed last month... Do you think isp cache can be wrong for that long? :(

And it's not that I can't access certain websites, I can't access ANY sites at all... It's really hard to get on-line with my cable connection :(
