Protein Shakes... Before or After training.

Had a debate with a friend on this issue. What's your call on the topic, when training do you take a protein shake before or after.

I myself take it after and I start training 40 min to 1 hour after a meal.

I have always heard after and that's when I drink mine.
The protien is good to help restore your muscles after you have worked them & your metabolism is faster so you continue to burn more calories even hours after you've finished your workout.

Always after. The reason you need the Protein is its vital ingredient in building the cell-walls in the new cells your body is replacing after your workout. You have whats called a "open window" of 45-60minutes after a workout. That is the right time to intake the Protein to max the benefit. If you take the Protein before the workout or to long after the workout, your body wont need it, and it will pass through your system or add it as fat.

As soon after as you can stomach it. The quicker you can get good digestible protein into your system the better.

Run a search on bodybuilding.com for a ton of good articles on the subject.

Of course there is nothing wrong with taking a shake an hour or two prior to a work out as well. I like to add oats and a whole banana to my shake before my leg and dead lift sessions for added energy. I still consume a shake after though.
