I'm watching CNN... Sesame Street in Africa... one of the muppets has HIV...

That took me by surprise.

That's a heavy topic for kids, but that just goes to show Western kids are too sheltered.

Some facts I found about HIV and the muppets:

Here are some facts: 98 percent of Muppets engage in unprotected sex more than three times a day. Also, those same Muppets have been with 42 or more partners within the last year alone! Out of that 98 percent, 100 percent admitted to having anal sex, which Muppets call "mooping," with all of their partners.

Is anyone surprised that one of the Muppets got the AIDS? I'm not. Some of these characters practically advertise their sexual deviance with names like Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Snuffleupagus. It doesn't take a genius to figure out how these sickos got those names.

I remember my favorite moment from "The Muppet Movie" when Janice proclaims in the bus station "I get the locker with the jacuzzi......"

I knew there was something funny going on......:winkwink:

wasn't that muppet introduced a couple years back?

Love Sex 10-25-2006 04:55 AM

they had that character for along time now because so many kids in africa have aids. Millions of african kids are orphaned because of aids.

I wrote a sociology essay a few years back on the different types of Sesame Streets around the world. The South African one has had the HIV girl for a little while now. In Egypt they focus on female characters and female rights, in the Israel/Palestine area they have had two streets that meet at a point. I like that they look at the world and adapt to it rather than thinking everyone is American.

In the areas where the kids will be watching the HIV character HIV is something they have all around them anyway and many of them might have it too.

we'll seeing as a good portion of kids in africa have or will have HIV they are doing a good job informing about it...

At some point why can't we let kids be kids? Let them enjoy their youth. Don't teach them about the horrors of the world.

ServerGenius 10-25-2006 06:35 AM

Coz that attitude got us into this situation in the first place :2 cents:

Those kids that would be watching that version of Sesame Street have faced horrors that are beyond what adults in the Western world see. By introducing such a character and not making her a 'victim' but just another character they are attempting to allow those kids to feel like kids for part of the day.

Sometimes, finding the horrors of the world might be easier for these kids if we put no restrictions to them at all.

In 2002, Sesame Workshop announced that an HIV-positive character would be introduced to Takalani Sesame, the South African version of the show. Many conservatives and religious groups wrongly presumed that the American version would be getting a "gay Muppet", presumably because of the early historical connection between gays and HIV in the U.S., but the HIV-positive character is only present on this international version of the show. The character, Kami, contracted HIV from a blood transfusion as an infant.
