cardio question...

Are two 15 minute jogs or brisk walks just as good as one 30 minute session?

aico 10-24-2006 09:00 PM

short answer... no

Long answer...

I believe it takes a certain amount of time (20 minutes?) to get your heart rate up to a certain level where you are actually getting a cardio workout.

RRRED 10-24-2006 09:11 PM

Sigh.. I kinda thought that too... :Oh crap It's starting to get really windy and cold and rainy here... and I still don't have my wrecked car back so I'm doing lots of short stints... and I'm tired.. and I'm busting out my pants.

Oh well I can tough out a whole 30 min a day. It won't kill me.

squishypimp 10-24-2006 09:12 PM

yeah your best bet is a longer jog :)

webgurl 10-24-2006 09:16 PM

i do 15 mins on the ski machine and 10mins on stair master thing
lately been really out of shape like i jog on the treadmill for
5mins and i am panting like i am gonna faint :(

AnneT 10-24-2006 09:26 PM

It's better to do it all at once. But it's better to 15 and 15 than nothing. Sometimes life gets in the way of cardio.

BTW the 20 minute rule is a bit of a myth, apparently. The first 20 minutes DO count.

The Demon 10-24-2006 10:04 PM

What are you trying to do man? Gain endurance? Lose weight? Lose fat?

WiredGuy 10-24-2006 10:49 PM

Nope, keeping your heart rate up for 30 minutes is much better than 2 short spurts of 15 min. Why is it I have a feeling this isn't actually about jogging :)

15 minutes? thats barely a warm up. it might be cold, but once you get going your body warms up and it shouldn't be a problem.

OzMan 10-24-2006 10:57 PM

yup one long one is much better..I don't feel the adrenalin, dopamine or wtf ever the "feel good" stuff your body produces until after about 45-50 minutes so I try to do an hour daily cardio

RRRED 10-24-2006 11:01 PM

Hahaha wiredguy I knew you'd say something like that!!

Ohh I just gotta lose about 10 lbs or so.. or go shopping one of the two. I have worked way extra lately which means sitting on my ass alot more.

I can't go to the gym till I get my car back from the shop really so I guess I just need to take the dog for a longer and faster walk.

I lied about the jogging part. I only jog if my dog is pulling me across the road to chase a squirrel or something lol.

soulbleed 10-24-2006 11:17 PM

do a 45 min walk then with your dog.

emthree 10-24-2006 11:38 PM

Yeh, you'll burn better if you go non stop.
But hey... do what you can untill you can build yourself up to where you want to be. Edurance doesnt happen overnight.

Damian_Maxcash 10-24-2006 11:43 PM

It depends on your fitness levels.

For example if I went jogging my heart rate would be at the required levels in about 30 seconds... 30 mins would kill me.

There is no right answer - it depends on the person

JD 10-24-2006 11:49 PM

nope. 15 mins is barely enough to get your body into the fat burning "zone" anything under that and you're just burning carbs n shit that you've eaten that day.

I suggest throwing down the bucks for a gym membership or getting something for your house. Walking in the rain/cold sucks ass.

The distance matters more than the time. If you want to break it down very easily (I'm risking a lot of flames by the other GFY doctors here) it's a simple distance * body weight = calories equation, and 3500 calories = 1 lb of fat. If you can burn 3500 more calories than you eat a week, you'll lose 1 lb of fat. Even with all the miracle diets and books and workout programs etc, this is a basic rule which works.

Wow! 3500 calories. I'm happy if I burn 2000 extra a week. The way I think about it, that's one day's worth of food gone per week. But I'm not really trying to lose any weight, just maintain my figure ;)

I don't know for sure but 20 minutes twice might work for you...

Webchick 10-25-2006 03:41 AM

It all depend on you, I got a personnal trainer and for my height and weight, I got to do 30 minutes of non stop cardio.. Got to start with a heart rate of 145bpm for the first 4 minutes then for 1 minutes i got to get it up to 175bpm.. then so on till I reach 30 minutes..

I'ts amazing how hard it is.. [But its worth it.. It works! :)

But for your question.. Nothing is better then cardio so It doesnt matter how long you do it, at least you are doing some..

nico-t 10-25-2006 04:24 AM

think i gotta start going to a gym weather starts to get fucked up

rigrunner 10-25-2006 04:31 AM

If you've only got 30 mins you should try the 'body pump' program.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_pump
You could probably get away with using tins or something if you don't have dumbells.

A nice strength and cardio workout. I do longer versions of it at my gym and fuckin love it. Once you get doing it everyday you start noticing your strength really builds, it's not the quickest way to lose weight (running is!) but it does help.

But kudos to you for actually doing something, im sure there's tonnes of lazy assed fuckers surfing by who complain about their weight but never do shit about it except cram another mars bar down their throats..

Cardio in order to burn fat requires long sessions. It takes per average person
20 minutes before the body starts to burn stored fat. During the first 20 minutes
your body burns carbon hydrates which haven't been stored as fat in the body.

Therefor you could better walk for an hour instead of running for half an hour
if you want to accomplish loosing weight. This doesn't apply if you want to gain
physical fitness level.

:2 cents:

rodney25 10-25-2006 08:33 AM

It simply depends on how intense and energy consuming any of those exercises.
