A Letter from Pat Tillman's Brother

Pat Tillman was an NFL star who turned his back on a multi-million dollar contract in order to serve in the military following 9/11. He was killed in Afghanistan by "friendly fire".

The following letter was written by his brother Kevin (who signed up alongside Pat), and was released a few days ago:

It is Pat?s birthday on November 6, and elections are the day after. It gets me thinking about a conversation I had with Pat before we joined the military. He spoke about the risks with signing the papers. How once we committed, we were at the mercy of the American leadership and the American people. How we could be thrown in a direction not of our volition. How fighting as a soldier would leave us without a voice? until we got out.

Much has happened since we handed over our voice:

Somehow we were sent to invade a nation because it was a direct threat to the American people, or to the world, or harbored terrorists, or was involved in the September 11 attacks, or received weapons-grade uranium from Niger, or had mobile weapons labs, or WMD, or had a need to be liberated, or we needed to establish a democracy, or stop an insurgency, or stop a civil war we created that can?t be called a civil war even though it is. Something like that.

Somehow America has become a country that projects everything that it is not and condemns everything that it is.

Somehow our elected leaders were subverting international law and humanity by setting up secret prisons around the world, secretly kidnapping people, secretly holding them indefinitely, secretly not charging them with anything, secretly torturing them. Somehow that overt policy of torture became the fault of a few ?bad apples? in the military.

Somehow back at home, support for the soldiers meant having a five-year-old kindergartener scribble a picture with crayons and send it overseas, or slapping stickers on cars, or lobbying Congress for an extra pad in a helmet. It?s interesting that a soldier on his third or fourth tour should care about a drawing from a five-year-old; or a faded sticker on a car as his friends die around him; or an extra pad in a helmet, as if it will protect him when an IED throws his vehicle 50 feet into the air as his body comes apart and his skin melts to the seat.

Somehow the more soldiers that die, the more legitimate the illegal invasion becomes.

Somehow American leadership, whose only credit is lying to its people and illegally invading a nation, has been allowed to steal the courage, virtue and honor of its soldiers on the ground.

Somehow those afraid to fight an illegal invasion decades ago are allowed to send soldiers to die for an illegal invasion they started.

Somehow faking character, virtue and strength is tolerated.

Somehow profiting from tragedy and horror is tolerated.

Somehow the death of tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of people is tolerated.

Somehow subversion of the Bill of Rights and The Constitution is tolerated.

Somehow suspension of Habeas Corpus is supposed to keep this country safe.

Somehow torture is tolerated.

Somehow lying is tolerated.ha

Somehow reason is being discarded for faith, dogma, and nonsense.ha

Somehow American leadership managed to create a more dangerous world.

Somehow a narrative is more important than reality.

Somehow America has become a country that projects everything that it is not and condemns everything that it is.

Somehow the most reasonable, trusted and respected country in the world has become one of the most irrational, belligerent, feared, and distrusted countries in the world.

Somehow being politically informed, diligent, and skeptical has been replaced by apathy through active ignorance.

Somehow the same incompetent, narcissistic, virtueless, vacuous, malicious criminals are still in charge of this country.

Somehow this is tolerated.

Somehow nobody is accountable for this.

In a democracy, the policy of the leaders is the policy of the people. So don?t be shocked when our grandkids bury much of this generation as traitors to the nation, to the world and to humanity. Most likely, they will come to know that ?somehow? was nurtured by fear, insecurity and indifference, leaving the country vulnerable to unchecked, unchallenged parasites.

Luckily this country is still a democracy.ha People still have a voice. People still can take action.ha It can start after Pat?s birthday.

Yes, UPI and other news sources have carried the story.

Learn more about the cover-up of Pat's death in the Pat Tillman Wikipedia entry.

The community I live in was particularly saddened by his death - I went to the same High School as Pat and his brother Kevin.

Don't get me wrong guys, I think it is tragic that he died, and that he was brave for joining the military. You can't take that away from him. But who's to say our country is a piece of shit for protecting freedoms by destroying the enemy. If we didn't attack them, would we see another 9/11 in the future? It's almost a certainty.

he did let them in ,thats is a untruth. if he was this monster then why wouldnt he used wmds if he had them. we knew he had nothing thats why we went in. n korea is testing fuckin nukes and we are doing nothing

Will you deny that the U.S. at one time armed and supported Saddam/Iraq, the Taliban/Afghanistan, and even Osama Bin Laden?

Are you denying that our occupation has not made Iraq safer but has in fact, led to that nation being on the verge of a civil war (if it is not already there)?

The puppet regimes that we have established in Afghanistan and Iraq, do not have the loyalty of their own people.

In Afghanistan, opium production is way up, and the Taliban may be headed back to power.

In Iraq, electricity and water supplies are still not back to pre-invasion levels. Meanwhile the people see how we have tortured prisoners, covered up the rape and murder of innocent civilians, and thrown their nation into complete chaos, where Shiites and Sunnis are massacering each other, and Shiites fight Shiites for control.

It is not just anti-war people that want an end to the travesty and lies that form the basis of the Bush policy - it is former Generals, including those who were on the ground in Iraq, as well as the top U.K. General who recently denounced the war.

You are the one that is coming off as immature and uninformed.

If you don't believe me (BTW, I'm a military veteran), then please read again the words of Kevin Tillman, who is undeniably speaking out of true patriotism, as one who has been there, and who lost a brother there.

Oh, I guess because you are a veteran you know everything about everything in this situation. Hat's off to you for serving, of which I respect, but that makes you know more of a reliable source than me. Yes, we did at one time sell arms to these people. How are we supposed to predict how they would all turn out. Any time a gun is sold there is a risk. The sale may lead to the protection of someones life or the death of someones life. This is always variable. Secondly, the civil strife in Iraq is due to insurgents and civil prejudices, not because of US temporary occupation. Their government is unstable because different religious sects are prejudiced. This is a constant. Third, the Taliban is far from their previous power and it will be a long time before they ever regain their former strength if they even do at all. The KKK is still around in the US. That doesn't mean that we will all be convinced by them of their racist views. Your logic is flawed. Lastly, I don't agree with everything in the "Bush" policy, but stop and think of what orders "he" can actually have carried out. If you want to know who makes alot of the bad descision, look to the generals. I believe they are denouncing it to cover up their own mistakes. BTW, Kevin Tillman is one soldier of the tens of thousands enlisted. He does not represent the entire army, thus, you cannot take everything from him as truth or fact, especially since he is depressed and angry at his brother's death.

Obviously if we were fighting a traditional war our military might would prevail. But that is not what we are fighting anymore. We are stuck in a quagmire.

We cannot hope to prevail in Afghanistan or Iraq if we are losing the hearts and minds of the citizens of those countries, and in that battle, we are taking a terrible beating due to the blind faith idealogues in the Bush Administration that are doing the bidding of the oil companies and the military industrial complex, while ignoring a majority of citizens of this country whom believe that we need to come up with an exit strategy.
