FreeBSD: how to read serial # from HD?

Is there a way to report the serial # from an installed IDE HD under FreeBSD?

Serial number. I've already seen the model number at boot :)

well start thinking, what would be the serial number, generated at time of formatting a volume? and what tools do you have for that?

You can use the smartctl utility to get the hard drive serial number.

It is part of smartmontools.

Uh... I just want the physical drive's serial number, nothing to do with formatting. :) It's to check when it was manufactured.
