Reminder: It is amazing how many problems instantly go away when you just don't care.

There's a movie scene I remember from long ago in a movie about Henry VII. He was in the middle of something and a lackey comes rushing in to tell him there is a person with an urgent matter to discuss. The king just says "Urgent for him." and tells him to fuck off.

try it sometimes.

Just like heart disease. :)

well, since one thing doctors always tell you when you have heart disease is to keep your blood pressure down, i imagine just not caring would actually help ;)

We all react that way on occasion and occasionally it even works, some things do resolve themselves.

But it backfires when that becomes the most common reaction to just about everything. We are in Iraq primarily because three-quarters of a century ago no-one was willing to question the wisdom of basing our economy on a product of which we have only limited supplies. Far more people suffer from asthma these days because we haven't dealt with the problem of pollution. Stress-related health issues affect many more lives than ever before and we don't even know why.

I guess in an absolutely selfish world, providing our problem becomes someone else's, your premise is still valid up to a point. But we also have the knack of not relating cause and effect when they are not immediate and direct. So for example when someone is ripped off by a cowboy contractor, they are unlikely to blame themselves for never having taken an interest in pushing for tighter consumer protection.
