Did anyone hear about gov't cutting down internet speeds?

Was speaking to a friend today who said he heard on the news that yesterday the government actually imposed a cut on internet speeds from ISPs. He wasn't sure what the numbers are but didn't the web feel slower to you guys since yesterday? Not every site but some that I frequent alot do seem slower. Maybe just my fiber optic acting up but what a coincidence.

Just wondering if anyone heard anything or knows anything.

GrouchyAdmin 10-20-2006 12:39 AM

This is the same bullshit as te fabled "modem tax".

If your fiber isn't working right, try taking off the end, and sucking out the bits that got stuck.

Ann-Angelcom 10-20-2006 12:56 AM

So I'm guessing you guys didn't hear it either? Was just curious and I'm trying to see if what he said was true.

Jace 10-20-2006 12:59 AM

nope, my speed is actually a little faster in the past few weeks

trust me, if they decided the internet needed to be slower, it would be ALL over the news

how would they handle large server networks? what about people that run offices from home?

there are too many factors to weigh in, someone is fucking with you, big time.

They do that here in the Philippines to track illegal VOIP usage. I'm not sure if they do that to crack down on webcam operations (known locally as "cybersex dens") though.

Do you have a fresh roll of tinfoil?

:winkwink:

SmokeyTheBear 10-20-2006 07:41 AM

actually your friend is partly right..

The u.s. was/is planning to limit speeds for some reason i cant remember why.. it was a bit more complex than simply turning the internet amplifier down to "9" though and it didnt sound very realistic

SmokeyTheBear 10-20-2006 07:45 AM

something else they might be referring to is windws vista.. supposedly it will require duplicate dns lookups causing twice the load on current dns

Worldnet 10-20-2006 08:01 AM

Amazing how rumors get the story all bent up! The news report they heard was about Iran cutting internet speeds. It was in the news yesterday.

Brad Gosse 10-20-2006 08:05 AM

I like when people say "The Government" and "They"

Who's govenment?

Most free countries would never pass a law to slow down the internet.

CheneyRumsfeld 10-20-2006 08:14 AM

they cut back the speed so the CIA computers can review what you say on the internet.
its just part of the patriot act.
nothing to concern yourself with.

Ann-Angelcom 10-20-2006 09:43 AM

lol so many different versions of the same story! So which is true....does anyone have links?

seeric 10-20-2006 09:45 AM

hahahahaha oh shit.

this is funny.

you been had.

:(

Dirty Dane 10-20-2006 09:54 AM

I heard that Bush has a cool personal software. With few clicks he can control the speeds, domains and so on. Even webcams.

EBORG9 10-20-2006 11:05 AM

What a bout congress

If they slow the internet down, how are congressmen going to e-mail thier paiges with lightning speed.

LOL.

Didn't hear anything about that. But anything retarded coming from the government shouldn't surprise anyone.

Ann-Angelcom 10-20-2006 06:04 PM

so i guess it is true....i wonder how it plays out now for our designs and content sizes. Seems to affect people browsing from homes. 128 kb is equivalent to what connection speed?

Spunky 10-20-2006 06:19 PM

I don't see that ever happening

minusonebit 10-20-2006 06:53 PM

What country are you talking about? "The government" is pretty damn non-specific.

crockett 10-20-2006 08:30 PM

I'd like to think that no civilized country would even consider passing such a law.

Ann-Angelcom 10-21-2006 12:33 PM

Smokey, I bet you are thinking what I'm thinking.... Net Neutrality

chaze 10-21-2006 02:51 PM

Sound like BS, if anything they will just keep the levels close for the dsl providers for competition reasons.

Meaning one can't go to high untill the other can keep up.

bobby666 11-20-2006 01:25 PM

yes and next year you'll have to put stamps on your emails to get them delivered!
