Electronic Arts releases Battlefield 2142 with spyware/adware.

So it's okay for a multi-million dollar company like EA to release a retail game like Battlefield 2142 with spyware / adware in it, but it's not okay to push spyware/adware on a website? ( I don't support either side in this battle. )

On a peculiar note, even though the world is ending in 2142, it appears that advertising will still be around. Battlefield 2142 features in-game ads, though we didn't get to see them firsthand during our testing. Still, there is a printed disclaimer that comes with the game telling you that Battlefield 2142 will analyze certain "advertising data" on your machine to determine what ads to display to you. Ironically, EA says that if you don't want your data shared with its advertising partner then "do not install or play the software on any platform that is used to connect to the Internet." But that would pretty much defeat the purpose of playing Battlefield 2142, wouldn't it? Of course, you could always play single-player against the artificial intelligence, though the AI won't be mistaken for human opponents any time soon, and the single-player is still limited to 16-player maps. Still, this is an example of things to come, as we begin to see dynamic in-game ads appear in more and more games.
It's awesome. EA is mining your PC for "advertising data."

I almost bought the game until I read this. I'll wait for the Xbox 360 version to come out early next year and then they can't mine anything but what games I've already played. =)

How can they get away with that ??

what the fuck........

If games weren't pirated they would be making money enough to avoid that shit.

Moves like this will get the government poking around and writing horribly oppressive laws. EA is off my list of companies to buy games from now.

Fuckers.

Well if they get rid of spyware, then the spyware companies have no products to sell, but if you sell spyware, you get the world coming down on you hard. What to do, what to do? :1orglaugh

And if they put out games that weren't utter garbage, then people would be more apt to buy them. Of the past 20 or so games I've played, maybe 5 we worth the price to play.

yo candyflip, how about giving me my money?

from what I took out of it it is for ads to be thrown into the game as you are playing it to make it look real life? Is this like billboards and shit like that?

teksonline 10-19-2006 11:45 AM

they are testing the waters, BF 2142 is a known dud, so might as well try a marketing gimmic to see future potential of including advertising in games

yeah, basically there are billboards and whatnot in the game... and as you run around the ad company can tell how long you look at them, what angle you are looking at them and so on..... and identify you from previous connections.... from this they hope to learn what you are interested in and display ads from that criteria....

I am playing a game, i am looking for something to shoot, can careless what a sign says.... stupid game to have this in.... not a very bright time
to introduce adware into games, as adware is currently the number one focus right now, 6-12 months ago it may have worked, today it's outlawed by the common person
