Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they'll get hurt and hold the school liable.

Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

While there is no districtwide ban on contact sports during recess, local rules have been cropping up. Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous. Modified versions now include softer balls and ways for children to re-enter the action.

Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Spokane, Wash., also recently banned tag during recess. A suburban Charleston, S.C., school outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

"I think that it's unfortunate that kids' lives are micromanaged and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," said Debbie Laferriere, who has two children at Willett, about 40 miles south of Boston. "Playing tag is just part of being a kid."

Another Willett parent, Celeste D'Elia, said her son feels safer because of the rule. "I've witnessed enough near collisions," she said.

Heard about this on the radio today. It's ridiculous what happens in schools now a days.

It isn't the schools, don't blame them. Blame the parents, the lawyers, and the open ended "sue everyone" world that the US has become. Quite simply, the schools cannot afford to have enough liablity coverage to protext themselves from the lawsuits that would come if they didn't take action.

You want to fix this? Don't blame the schools, support tort reform... millions of dollars because little Johnny got a bump on his head in the playground is the sort of thing that must get stopped.

This is sad. It reminds me of that story from about a year ago where a girl who was around 8-9 years old was freaking out and hitting and kicking the techers and principle. She got up on a table in the office and was screaming and throwing a fit. Finally they grabbed her and sat her in a chair ended up calling the police because she was out of control. The police came and got control of the kid and held her until the mom showed up. The mom decided that her kid had done nothing wrong, even when she saw the video of her little angel being a complete shithead and sued the school.

when I was a kid it seemed like in almost every situation the parents sided ith the teachers and would back them. Now it is just the opposite and no matter what a school does it is in the wrong.

Hey by them banning another physical 'sport', they are helping by creating a whole new generation of overweight and obese webmasters and surfers! The cycle goes on :)

Too many cry babies these days. Getting fucked up and falling down with a few scrapes and brusies is part of growing up.

Im so glad I already grew up and got my ass kicked a few times and know how to take it. The first time kids from this generation get their but kicked in the real world they will commit suicide because they don't even know how to take a little fall and get back up.

You know they don't play dodge ball either. They call it medic. They use a soft ball and tag each other with it. Schools now days are just lame as hell when it comes to P.E. I miss the good old days when you would get nailed with a hard ball.

Unsupervised games can be banned since these are just kids and some awful things on the course of the games might happen. However, as long as there's enough adult supervision on them, I think they still deserve to have fun and enjoy while at school.

Hmm that actually reminds me of back when I was in Infants school. We couldn't play 'bulldog' or Tag/IT ... but we were allowed to play full contact rugby and football. Fucking backwards :1orglaugh
