We have a very very clean house...there is nothing lying around anywhere

do they live inside the fruit until you get it home?

serious question here

They lay their eggs in skins, banana peels, etc.. so when you take them home they'll hatch.

There are already eggs on the fruits right after they were being harvested. Maybe they only reached their adult stage after reaching your house.. (just my own hypothesis)

they are nasty and hard to get rid of... that's for sure!
