Maybe Satelite phones but not cell.

Sly 10-16-2006 10:15 PM

They were allowed cells for a couple months about 3 years ago, then they got taken away again. So yes, cells are banned. Half the country lives at the poverty line and depends on foreign aid to survive. Even if they were not banned the average person would not be able to afford one... unlike most of the rest of the world, lol.

Sly 10-16-2006 10:17 PM

Oh, and I'm sure the military elite have cells. They live pretty luxurious lives (hence sanctions on luxury items).

Its not a joke...its very real.... Lisa Ling went undercover to North Korea and was saying this on TV.

http://images.oprah.com/images/tows/...03_284x218.jpg

On assignment for National Geographic Channel's Explorer, investigative reporter Lisa Ling got a rare look inside North Korea?something few Americans have ever been able to do. North Korea has a history of hostility toward journalists and Westerners, so Lisa went undercover as a medical coordinator to enter the country.

The nature of the society was quickly apparent. Upon her arrival, Lisa was assigned six government escorts who watched her every move in the country, and even stayed in Lisa and her investigative team's hotel with them.

Lisa says that life in North Korea is completely dominated by the government. Worried about American ability to spy using cellular technology, no one in the country is allowed to own a cell phone. Lisa even had to turn hers over to government officials. Additionally, the Internet is forbidden and there are only two television stations in the entire country?both run by the government. One guard even reprimanded Lisa for having a fashion magazine with her. "People are literally cut off from the rest of the world," Lisa says.

She explains that because there was never an official end to the Korean War, U.S. troops still patrol the border between North and South. The North Koreans she spoke with held favorable opinions about their country's nuclear ambitions. "I asked all of them about nuclear testing, and they are so proud that their country is standing up against America."

WarChild 10-16-2006 10:26 PM

I just watched something on the guards that stand duty in the DMZ, literally only a few feet away from each other.

The North Korean guards are probably some of the best fed people in all of North Korea, but still many of them look gaunt. The guards stand facing each other with their sides turned to the American/S. Korean guards. If one tries to defect, the other is supposed to shoot him.

The American's that guard on the South Korean side (along with South Koreans) are all hand picked to be large an intimidating. They must be at least 6 feet tall and they stand facing the North Koreans without sunglasses, rain coats or even snow jackets. The stoic unmovable man, dressed against all elements the same way; his standard fatigues.

I have a hunch this will change soon. Just read about a common international will (China included) to kick Kim's ass out through an internal revolution or coup.

i would guess a lot of things are happening right now that we might never know anything about to get him out and collapse his government. if the entire world is against them in public... imagine the discussions and things going on in private.

:2 cents:

The leader of North Korea also shuts down the entire countries power grid at 9pm every night, with the exception of Pyongyang where his palace and military leaders are.

Matt_WildCash 10-16-2006 10:59 PM

Control the media control the people. They are so brainwashed they worship Kim as a God.

Thats not a country you want to have nukes.

More likely they think about doing something like in the Eastern Europe, having some army liders involved. probably there are tons of chinese secret agents infiltrated there during the years.

It would be not the first coup try in NK, there were 3 in the 90's, after old Kim died.
