Fuck porn...I shoulda' been a roofer!

So far two quotes on a new roof on our house - $8200 and $8900. :(

That includes strippin' off three old layers, installing a replacement Velux skylight, adding five ventilators and flashing the chimney (sounds sexy, huh?).

Fuckin' bandits. But it needs to be done before the snows hit.

But wait. It gets better. The furnace is 27 years old, too. :1orglaugh

This 'ole house is showing its 118 years.

i personally am glad to pay someone to be up on a roof all day in the summer when its 100+ degrees outside :) wont catch me roofing, adult is the way to go :)

woj 10-15-2006 12:23 AM

construction is a great business, the actual roofers probably don't make much, but the construction company owner is I'm sure making a killing...

while you make posts the whole day for 20 cents a post? heh

Solid Bob 10-15-2006 12:29 AM

Lot of liability and shit in roofing, high insurance, big turnover. The money is OK but not amazing without effort same as anything else.

If I were twenty years younger...I'd be tempted to do it myself. But these days I ain't too fussy on carryin' shingle bundles up a 30-foot ladder to a steep pitch roof.

That said...they'll be lucky if the temps are much above freezing when the new roof goes on.

LiveDose 10-15-2006 12:33 AM

Hard work that's for sure.

brand0n 10-15-2006 12:34 AM

i roofed growing up.

i wouldnt roof my own house now if i had 2

hardest work i think ive ever done.

BV 10-15-2006 12:37 AM

i just paid over 20K for my new roof. It's interlocked galvanized steel with no exposed screws. Rated at 135 MPH wind proof, lol (i wont be here to test it)

PS: SilentKnight, I've been meaning to ask you if you would be interested in selling some images to me for print, some of your non adult stuff that is.

(For a brick & mortar art gallery)

Sarah - GTS 10-15-2006 04:30 AM

around here we are lucky if a roofer will even get us a quote! they are so busy they completely lack at all areas of customer service, hell we're lucky if they even call us back!! I hate dealing with contractors, but I'm learning how........call every single one in the yellow pages and ask them all to quote, then you are lucky if 3 quotes come in.............

A lot of work but probably not too far off. Take a few sales to pay for it.

If we get winds of 135mph, the roof would be the least of our concerns :1orglaugh - we have an ancient century tree on the front lawn that would undoubtedly take out the rest of the house.

As for selling pics - sure, hit me up via email - sltknt @ cogeco.ca (remove spaces).

PSGuru 10-15-2006 08:40 AM

Yup, just got mine done for $8,500... had a complete re-roof from damages from hurricane Wilma last year

L-Pink 10-15-2006 08:51 AM

Something my contractor friends and I once discussed. In most areas a good contractor is booked anywhere from 30-90 days out. Suddenly a natural disaster strikes and 20,000 homes need work.

Who the hell is able to start work on the houses? Most of them having very low insurance company limits on estimates?

borked 10-15-2006 10:44 AM

we just had the roof beams treated - f'kin insect infestation. 3000 euros to inject this shit under pressure then spray everwhere. 6 hours work for 2 blokes. Bloody thieves.
Our house is 180 years old, and I've done everything myself - renovated throughout, 40m2 loft conversion, electricity, plumbing redone throughout, , but when it comes to specialist stuff, I prefer to pay the pros. Even if they are rip off merchants.

Pete-KT 10-15-2006 10:45 AM

pricey but worth it if you think about it;)

kenny 10-15-2006 10:50 AM

Thoe construction jobs are starting to be more in demand since everybody and his dog is going to college to not be a roofer :1orglaugh

Rosie 10-15-2006 11:01 AM

We just moved into a house with a thatched roof - needs replacing every 25 years apparently :(

nowadays tradesmen earn really good money, they are in demand, ive lost count of how many builders ive heard about living in huge houses driving flash cars!!

Meloman 10-15-2006 12:59 PM

My younger brother is a carpenter/handyman and makes $70 an hour.

Tradesman definitely get paid well.

Why 10-15-2006 01:09 PM

well that price doesnt seem too outlandish, but that depends on size of roof i guess.

also realize that they cant work all day, $70 an hour isnt that much when you can only work 8-9 months of the year and the other months you are not guaranteed constant work.

KrisKross 10-15-2006 01:14 PM

Fuck roofing. I should've been an endodontologist.

I had to get an emergency root canal a couple of weeks ago. The whole process took less than 90 minutes and cost $875. That's $583/hour.
