UFC - Last fight was worth waiting for

Rich Franklin just got dominated by Anderson Silva...

Rich has no answer to the Muay Thai Clinch, and got destroyed.

I haven't seen someone's nose as fucked up as Rich Franklin's since Rampage got his banged in the same way by Wanderlai. Rich's nose is gonna need some serious surgery!

On another note, I co-sponsored Dan Lauzon, and while he didn't win, made us proud for his 1st time in the UFC, and taking the fight on 2 weeks notice.

Lance69 10-15-2006 01:04 AM

Cool, Anthony. Anyone who gets into the UFC must be one tough fucker.
I still can't believe how one sided it was...

And unfortunately, based on the last couple, many people probably didn't buy this one! You just can't win! Anybody got a pic of Rich Franklins nose?

You don't want to play that game.

It took Fedor 3 rounds to take out Babalu Sobral, while it took less than a round for Chuck Liddell.

QuaWee 10-15-2006 12:37 PM

People were laughing at me at sherdog because I said Silva was going to KO Franklin. Most people thought Silva was going to win because he wasn't that succesful in Pride. But, they forget he has a belt in Cage Rage and Shooto is I am not mistaken

congrats on the co-sponsor:thumbsup

While that could arguably be said while talking about the Heavyweight Division, I think it's not the case here, especially in the Middleweight / Welterweight / LHW divisions. They have far more depth.
I'd love to see Pride HW Champ Fedor or the Newly crowned Openweight Grand Prix Champion Mirko "CroCop" Filipovic against Silvia. It would be a smashfest i think.

Hey Anthony, I dont train in MMA or anything like this so I dont understand; why didn't Rich defend or break out of the clinch? Rich looks bigger/stronger than Silva and I'd bet that he is stronger; why didnt he just overpower Silva?

I remembered this one TUF fight where Rich Franklin and Matt Hughes were the coaches, and Hughes's fighter had Rich's fighter in the clinch and kept kneeing him and you could hear Rich in the corner yelling over and over again "Don't let him do that to you!" Ironic.

The Plum Clinch, as it's called in Muay Thai is a pretty off balancing technique. You are pulling your opponent's neck and head towards you and down to your waist. The whole idea of the attack is to off balance your opponent. When you do not have balance/base, you can't attack, as you saw with Rich Franklin.

The offensive part is that you can attack, because you have excellent base, the knees are the main weapons of attack, Silva did a clinic on Franklin, on how to do the Plum attack.

The first part of that attack is to attack the floating ribs, to soften your opponent up. Once Franklin's arms came down to protect his ribs, Silva went for the head, and broke his nose.

Most ppl can't understand how powerful that grip is from an experienced Muay Thai fighter, you are so off balance, you just have to hang on. In that type of situation, imho Rich Franklin should have blocked the knee and rolled through to the ground, rather than take all those shots.

My hats off to both fighters, I can't wait for the rematch!

No kidding those shots hurt as bad as they look, Anthony is an MMA encyclopedia, thanks for the very articulate explanation. Do you teach Anthony? If not you should.

Damn, I missed that Franklin-Silva fight. :(

Vitasoy 10-15-2006 10:22 PM

Silva's knees just overwhelmed rich and that was a brutal knee to the nose ouch

DTK 10-15-2006 10:37 PM

i'm sure that franklin is one of the toughest mofos you'll ever meet, but DAMN! any word on whether he sustained broken ribs?

Fucksakes 10-15-2006 10:37 PM

rich doesnt look like himself latly, noticed on the ultimate fighter tv show, he looked all down... like he didn't want to be there, and than last night walking out he just wasnt excited..

Anthony 10-15-2006 10:52 PM

Not making excuses for Rich, but Jorge Gurgel, who is Rich's training partner passed on that Rich was sick the night before, and was throwing up till the last minute getting into the ring.

Rich is a better fighter than last night, and maybe a little bit of ring rust, being out 7 months, but damn, I gotta agree, he wasn't himself.

He definitely didn't bring his A-game. I'd like to see the rematch. That's one I'll buy for sure.

HAPPYPEEKERS 10-15-2006 11:17 PM

looking forward to a rematch

If you thought Rich Franklin was going to win you were wrong. Almost a week out I decided the fight was going to Anderson Silva. If you read some of the interviews he gave he was never positive about the fight. Even Randy Coutour said in an interview that he wasnt going to win the fight because Rich was going to stand with him. Rich was afraid of Andersons ground game. Being trained in BJJ under the Nogueara brothers who wouldnt be scared of Andersons ground game. Plus you had Rich coming off of surgery. And the first 4 months he couldnt do anything. Long story short. +140 Anderson Silva = Great bet.

To me the real fight of the night was Sean Sherk vs Kenny Florian. Who thought that was going to go five rounds. Hats off to Kenflo.

Upset of the night was Cheick Kongo. He needs to learn some ground game badly. He has what it takes to beat the HW division as long as he doesnt go up against a wrestler. Until then he wont ever see the belt.

SxDx 10-16-2006 09:42 AM

yeah, Franklin got destroyed. His nose got moved over to underneath his right eye. shit was fucked up. i'm sure now he's also got serious black eyes too.

I want to see David Lou vs Rich Frank II. David was having personal problems with his manager and didn't look like himself in their first fight.

The guy that Kongo fought wa just laying and praying. I hate when some wrestlers enter MMA and just lay on their opponent. But, I agree Kongo needs to work on his ground game

RealityWife 10-16-2006 10:27 AM

Franlin wasnt himself for sure. He had balls just taking the fight when he wasnt 100%. Broken wrist, sick, and not there mentally for sure. Only people who have never seen him or watched his previous fights wills say negative remarks about Franklin. There is a ton of pressure on these fighters to step into the octagon when they are not healthy, like the first tito vs. Lidell fight.
In the MMA every fighter loses, period. Fighting is not college football and newbies to MMA will think that a fighter with a loss is not a great fighter. WRONG. Franklin is a bad Mofo and he will be back. Just wait to Silva loses and then people will be jumping off the bandwagon saying hes no good.

Martin3 10-16-2006 10:31 AM

No one really expected his clinch to be that strong. I've seen alot of Silva's fight and don't remember anything quite like that. I actually thought if Silva was going to beat him it would be from the outside with alot of foot work and pin point shots.

There's a second not long after they cliche when you can see the look on Frankins face, it's the "holy shit this aint gonna work" look :1orglaugh

UniversalPass Pete 10-16-2006 10:32 AM

Damm! I missed it!! Went out for my B-DAY! would have rather watched the fights.:Oh crap
