Musicians - In Here Please!
Hey guys - I want to be able to record a lil' music on my computer. I'm looking for some decent drum machine software and want to be able to lay down some drum tracks and then overdub some bass and guitar tracks. What do I need to get this going?
Thanks!!! |
soundforge comes to mind

If you really want the *best* sounding drums, you need to get Drumkit From Hell Superior (DKFH). $300 for over 30gb of samples. They're in their raw format, so you need an external recording application like Cakewalk Sonar, Cubase, etc... to first route the drums (to a keyboard, virtual synth, or electronic drumkit like i do), and also apply mixing / mastering to get them to sound good. Here's an mp3 of the samples in action: Sonor of Metal
You *could* hand plot all of that on the midi, althought it might be time consuming cause you have to plot every cymbal, tom, etc... If you got yourself a finger pad, or even an electronic kit like myself, its a lot easier. I personally haven't messed around with those particular samples enough, haven't had enough time to learn how to mix/master, but I have recorded some stuff directly from my electronic drumkit samples, they don't sound too shabby either ;) here's something i recorded |

drums are routed to DKFH through sonar 5 pro. guitars are recorded through line6 toneport ux2 with metal shop extension. and i use a lot of WAVES plugins. Here's some other stuff i've recorded... http://beingband.com/mp3/Intro.mp3 http://garysimon.net/withoutsuperior.mp3 http://beingband.com/mp3/forwhom.mp3 |

Check out Logic Pro by Apple.
Many top musicians and composers use it. Great for use with SoundTrack Pro which is part of the Final Cut Pro Studio Suite. ADG Webmaster |

You will get all these people trying to show how l33t they are and trying to get you to use things that you don't need. While those things will sound better given the production experience, all you really need is a simple program.
Fruityloops will certainly do the job that you need. I think they have a downloadable demo, the program is simple as hell and will do what you need. |
fruity loops will do the drum tracks. Did you all miss that he wants to lay down guitar and bass tracks overtop? I use Steinberg Nuendo for recording, but you can get something as cheap as Cakewalk, or cubase, protools. Any of those will work for laying down multible tracks. I still recommend Nuendo, but its 1200.00 so maybe more than you would want to pay.

My best friend owns The Loft recording studio in Hollywood. He has produced tons of big artists. If you need help he is the guy to talk to. He is very cool and doesn't mind helping people. He could even teach you how to use whatever gear or programs you end up with. Let me know if you would like me to put you two in touch.
