Nikon D80 Vs Canon 400D

I'm stuck between which one I should get.

In Australia the Nikon D80 is about $2200 AUD and the Canon 400D is $1500 AUD. Im getting mixed reviews to which make has better lens/flashes etc.

I like the feel of the Nikon as my hand is big and fits better and has good balance but the Canon has a nice feel as well and its cheaper ( $700 cheaper).

Need some opinions.

Nikon

Get the Nikon.

Reasons:

Nikon
Viewfinder big and bright, identical to D200, which is 1700 US$
420 segment RGB Color Matrix Metering
really excellent battery life (up to 750 shots)
Nikon has new affordable lenses that are world class

Canon
No spot metering

I have a Nikon D70 and the SB800 flash. Combined together I can shoot in any situation be it a photo shoot or a dark nightclub.

Yep, that's exactly right.

Spot Metering. Put the camera on manual exposure and point it around while looking at the exposure bar graph. You adjust the manual exposure so that the elements of your image are exposed, according to the bar graph, as you want them to be rendered.

You don't really need this on the Nikon because it has Matrix metering.

I bought the Canon 350D and wished i had stuck to Nikon after 30 years of using them... Go Nikon

Zorgman 10-13-2006 07:52 AM

xcitecash, is the canon that bad? picture quality or just the feel?

tony286 10-13-2006 09:12 AM

they both have good points and bad points just remember your buying into a lens system. So its like a marriage.

I always shoot Nikon. And if there is no spot metering then that really is a good reason to pick it up.

I am using Canon EOS-20D here. Works well. :)

I just got the Canon 400D, and the picture quality is more than good enough, at least for my amateur style photos. I won't go into detail, because to be honest, I know shit all about cameras. Now I just need to learn how to use it :Oh crap

Khun 10-14-2006 10:45 AM

Big Nikon fan here... Nikon just seems to do things where they make more sense. I personally shoot a D200 with a D70 as a backup. And pony up the cash to get the f/2.8 lenses. They are worth it!

NinjaSteve 10-14-2006 10:57 AM

id prefer Canon 400D

Dood 10-14-2006 12:02 PM

The canon 30d has spot metering. Got one a couple months ago and I enjoy it.
