How do i stop forum spammers?

Every morning when i wake up i have to delete posts from random forum spambots i guess. I have the forum email protected like most forums. So you need to confirm by email first. What else can i do? This is getting too much. Soon it will be a mainpage full of spam. Why doesnt gfy have this?

Have an image verification for the posts until they reach 30 then have it unlock that feature.

Image verification with email confirmation would be a good start. Do you have these implimented yet?

edit: just saw you say that you did.

If you have the image verification script setup so they have input the data BEFORE posting then they are doing it manually... Inwhich case ban their ips or get a group of mods to handle it.

If you are running a VBulletin based forum check out http://www.vbulletin.org and search for 'spam' on their board, you should find a plugin that will allow you to set a post# that will deny users from posting links until they have hit a certain amount of posts.

I have that running on all 15 of my webmaster forums right now and it works great, its cut down the time spent by mods editing or moving posts by almost 70% :)

Regards,

Lee

Maybe there's a "plugin" that can determine spambot text from a regular poster text. I'm not a forum person, so I wouldn't know. Or a better "captcha" solution.

georgeyw 10-10-2006 05:55 PM

image verification, email confirmation and if it's really bad implement admin moderation before allowing thme to post.

What forum software are you using? I found that SMF & VB don't seem to let as many spammers through.

Roberto the Perverto 10-10-2006 05:58 PM

I had this problem for a while, so I wrote a script to manage and auto-moderate my forum(s).

hit me up if you want to know more. :)

I spose no url postingg until after 30 posts would help to stop the forum spam?? TD - what hacks have you installed?

There is spam here every now and then though...

vvq 10-10-2006 06:29 PM

don't allow links/images to be posted until a user has 15-20 posts or so.
