Really obscure comedy trivia - can anyone answer this?

A while back, GFYers helped me identify a book I had been trying to find for years. Now I want your help with a comedy routine. This is really obscure, I think, and I am not convinced anyone will be able to answer it but I hope I'm wrong.

Thirteen or fourteen years ago, there was a synidcated radio show called The Comedy Hour, hosted by Len Belzer. The Comedy Hour introduced me to all kinds of hilarious stand-ups, many of whom never became very big. To this day, I remember some awesome routines I've never heard since.

OK, the one I want to find: Len once played a routine by a British comedian whose name I now cannot remember. I am pretty sure it wasn't Rowan Atkinson or anyone else who had much success in the USA. The routine was a story about coal miners. I think the plot was that the comedian was describing a book about coal miners or the memoirs of one specific coal miner. The whole thing was delivered completely straight, with in-depth descriptions of the coal miners going down into the mine, finding lumps of coal, bringing them to the surface, etc. I know it sounds stupid but the deadpan delivery combined with how seriously the narrator was taking the whole coal mining thing made it absolutely hilarious. I would love to know who the hell did that routine and where I can find it and more of his comedy.

I don't expect much, but there are a lot of people with a lot of tastes here, so maybe...

Bonus: Does anyone remember the comedians Gary Lazer or Mike McDonald (MacDonald?). They did some of the funniest damn stuff I ever heard and I can't even seem to dig them up on Google.

Thanks,
SpaceAce

Actually, I think it might have been Peter Cook, but I can't find the routine! All I can find are some references to being a coal miner instead of a judge. If anyone can find the whole thing for me, I'd appreciate it.
