Super serious question.

Someone please explain why the mouse pointer does not scare flys away that land on your monitor, yet real movement around one does?

I don't have flies on my monitor, so I can't help you on that one, but I do have some related questions - why do cats and dogs jump at objects on a TV screen, and why do birds fly into mirrors (don't they see the other bird - their reflection - coming at them)?

maybe flies are smarter than we think...

MaddCaz 10-07-2006 08:13 PM

hehehehehe

it probably has something to do with air movement and the vibrations an object moving through air causes.

i think it has to do with the way fly's see. their eyes dont pick up the movement of the screen because they cant see it.

Flies have a very highly-evolved evasion reaction which helps to ensure their survival. It is possible to confuse a fly's evasion system by swatting it with two objects simultaneously from different directions. The holes in a fly swatter minimise the air current which warns the fly of being hit, whilst reducing air resistance and increasing speed of the swat. This evasion reaction can also be used against the fly. Clapping your hands several inches above the fly will cause it to try to escape, usually into your just closing hands.
I guess a computer mouse wouldnt set off a flies evasion reation

For entirely different reasons though...see, my wife keeps a very clean house, whereas you broke out one of your pistolas and busted a cap in the screen of one of your monitors (after hitting that fly right between his hundreds of eyes), thereby serving notice to all flying insects that AaronM's monitor was not a happy place to camp out at.

Ok yes it is feasable to keep any and all flies out of your house and or off your monitor.
I just had this super crazy idea to have an open window today.

Zero to do with a clean house.

filiform hairs. a common feature of a number of arthropods.

And my ants that live in computer are not afraid of the mouse as well. :)
