How many calories do you eat a day?

Other thread got me thinking. It shouldn't be too hard to get a rough idea and after thinking about it you may really be shocked about how much crap you eat.

I really don't eat much. Adding up a couple days I eat anywhere between 1000-1300 calories a day, and about half of that is beverages. Wow, that isn't much compared to the 2000 calorie basic diet.

marketsmart 10-07-2006 07:59 PM

(yes, i am bored. wife is gone. i am busy working)

my experience has taught me that unless you write every single thing down that you put into your mouth and add it all up.. there is no real way to know. the problem is that we are all liars. we are all the best liars we know. we lie to ourselves about every single little thing that ties into self esteem and self image :)

i am 230 pounds at 5'10" and around 25% bodyfat at the moment. last time i tested my BMR, it was at 1900 (i.e. i should be eating 1900 calories a day to maintain, assuming i am not exercising etc). i have a very slow metabolism. even when i am training hard. when i am eating totally clean (whole, natural, good foods with no crap at all) and trying to slim down, i usually eat about 2300 a day. if i am trying to get bigger, i usually have a hard time eating more than 3500 if i'm lucky. if i am just slacking and eating crap, like i have been for the last 4 months or so, it can easily be 4000 or more.

my experience from the gym and training people is that every single person lies to themselves (myself included) about what they are eating, how much they are eating and have some pretty odd ideas about what they should be eating and how much.

a good exercise for anyone is to set a target of X,XXX calories a day as a bodybuilder would - with XX% from protein, XX% from Carbs and XX% from fat (say 40/40/20) and see how fucked up your eating is exactly. you will be surprised everytime and immediately realize what foods have a place in your diet and which do not.

Pretty much 2500 a day with very little variance. When I was in crash diet phase, 2000.

psili 10-07-2006 08:36 PM

I'm 5'10", buck fifty-five.

I hate eating. Waste of time in my opinion... But I do it when I'm hungry and I don't do a satisfactory job of it. Dried miso soup in the morning, trail snacks through the day with a possible lunch of crap from King Soopers and then a dinner my bride makes that's quite tasty and large but I'm not hungry for.... If I wasn't such a lazy bastard, I'd work out in any sense of the term and my life style would naturally adjust.

Just so happens, these days, I'm too much of a pussy to do such things. *shrug*

That's my negative two cents on the subject. :) Cheers, folks.

It is difficult to count. I try not to eat fat food, but when i really want - i do.

shahab6 10-07-2006 09:50 PM

around 1500 to 2000

JD 10-07-2006 09:52 PM

i'm eating about 2800-3k but my maintenance level is 3200. My trainer is starting me on a 1 day 1600 2 days 2600 diet for the next 6 weeks starting monday.

It's not really about how few calories you eat. You could eat 2k calories a day and get fucking HUGE fat if you ate it all in 1 meal and never did anything. Spreading 2k out throughout the day, you'd be eating 5-6 times a day and most likely lose weight because your metabolism would go up a bit

L0stMind 10-07-2006 10:00 PM

I was shooting for 4500 cals until sept. Then I went on vacation and its kinda gone downhill..

if you need 2000 calories a day, eat 2000 calories a day and burn 2000 calories a day... where does the fat come from? ;)

eating more smaller meals throughout the day does not speed up your metabolism. thats a common misunderstanding. your metabolism speeds up and slows down in proportion to how much you eat. the point of eating more, smaller meals is to prevent your metabolism from slowing down or it could be said that it will support a faster metabolism as you increase it through exercise. conversly, you can eat 1-2 huge meals a day, not be able to use that volume of food for immediate energy needs, store it as fat and crash 2hrs or so, after you eat.

I'm really bad at counting calories but last time I did I was between 1800-2500 but my fat intake was like 45g. Like I posted in my other thread I've replaced a lot of items (mountain dew is now water, cookies are now figs, chicken is now breadless/skinless, i snack on beef jerky which is 0 trans fat and 97% fat free, also for sweets I've got Blue Bunny which has amazing chocolate ice-cream bars that are only 90 calories, also eat granola bars)

TimBlaze 10-07-2006 10:35 PM

1400-2200/day

baddog 10-07-2006 10:42 PM

Vitasoy 10-07-2006 10:43 PM
