In this communal toilet there was a bucket full of water, inside the bucket there was a stick, and at the end of the stick was a sponge. So every single one of them after shitting would take the stick, wipe his ass with the sponge, then put it back into the bucket.

It kinda defeats their innovation of sanitary community toilet facilities. So, I doubt the story.

I know most is true, just not sure about the sharing of the sponges nor the buckets. The toilets did have running water and ways to wash your hands though.

I am pretty sure the sharing issue is unknown, and very well could be true since they had no real concept of germs.

Actually I saw it tonight on discovery, the toilet they showed didn't have a bucket but a small canal instead where the sticks with the sponges were, so you take a dump, wipe your ass, and leave the stick back in the water in front of you.
