this is how the Romans used to wipe their asses

They had communal tiolets with 20 or more people able to shit together at the same time. In this communal toilet there was a bucket full of water, inside the bucket there was a stick, and at the end of the stick was a sponge. So every single one of them after shitting would take the stick, wipe his ass with the sponge, then put it back into the bucket.

That's what I call romentic experiense!

Violetta 10-07-2006 10:04 AM

Libertine 10-07-2006 12:13 PM

Sounds like 17th century sailors... those had a rope with a big knot in it hanging in the water, and after shitting over the side of the ship, they'd pull up the rope, use it to clean their ass, and throw it back.

It kinda defeats their innovation of sanitary community toilet facilities. So, I doubt the story.

I know most is true, just not sure about the sharing of the sponges nor the buckets. The toilets did have running water and ways to wash your hands though.

I am pretty sure the sharing issue is unknown, and very well could be true since they had no real concept of germs.

Actually I saw it tonight on discovery, the toilet they showed didn't have a bucket but a small canal instead where the sticks with the sponges were, so you take a dump, wipe your ass, and leave the stick back in the water in front of you.

p.s. for some reason that make me think of fondue

VINEGAR-SOAKED SPONGE ON A STICK
I saved this one for the 'serious' finale because these devices were both used in ancient Roman toilets and were mentioned as implements used to torture Christ during his crucifixion. I purchased the closest thing to what might the Romans might have had (a small loofah sponge) and soaked it in some white vinegar I had on hand in the pantry. As with the Sears catalogue, I felt slightly subversive purchasing something in the Wal-Mart cosmetics department that I actually intended to wipe my ass with
