Ever use CARFAX.com?

seems like a good service,

i am checking an 03 and the car has no history since late 03 in the record, what could this mean?

MaddCaz 10-07-2006 06:49 AM

I did. Was pretty helpful when I used it

fallenmuffin 10-07-2006 06:50 AM

Yeah, I use it all the time because I'm looking for a car. As for the record not sure I guess it means its been owned by the same person since 03 without any damage ?

ya that is what i am guessing also, but it is odd because in between it has service records with mileage updates, but since then no updates.

but i will be in pretty good shape since it has been 1 owner.

Use CarProof instead. They are definitly better for Canadians. :2 cents:

It just means that there has been no data entered in that period.

In general, Carfax (and others) get info from data entry at places that supply that info (car dealers, insurance companies) and from places that have public records law (emissions programs, state titles, police reports) applied to them.

Since the title has not changed, there would be no state entries. And if he stopped going to the dealer and started going to a local mechanic for maintenance, the service records would not appear.

i have a friend who makes a living off of buying cars and reselling via ebay and locally....my advice to you that he offered up is to simply confront the owner on this info. he said to see what kind of story he says. simply ask why no records since 03....he said u have to be very carful in buying a used car, everyone is out to make a buck including car dealers that sell certfied...

CarFAX is for the most part worthless. Trust me. Even on insurance claims and police reports accidents don't always show up.

The only thing that it seems to be good for is to make sure the car has a clean title (though you don't need them to tell you that) and that the odometer isn't being messed with.

Tell me about it. I made a wholesale purchase at our BMW gallery. Bought a 330ci to flip. Run a CarFAX and come to find out that the car has a Illinois salvage title but a clean reissued Massachusetts title and that's why BMW took it in on trade.

So not even the dealers rely on CarFAX though in this case they should have.

Needless to say they did take the 3 series back.

IMHO Carfax is a joke.
What it does report is probably accurate. The problem is what it does not.
If you are expecting every minute detail of work thats been done its not listed.

MetaMan 10-07-2006 09:35 AM

ok thanks for the info everyone, i wasnt expecting carfax to give me to to much info but i was a little surprised that no new entries were made within 2 years.

its all good if i am sold i faulty car i will go and beat the living shit out of the guy because i am an internet gangster.

Carfax is very good for finding out the overall history of a car, especially as it moves state to state. I would highly recommend that you don't buy a car that has moved from one state to another, especially if it wasn't registered to an individual on the move. It is also good to look that the odometer reports, because you can spot times where the car may have sat for a long time not being driven. If that matched as a change of state, then you can almost be certain that the car was accidented or damaged in some manner.

DON'T BUY ANY LOUISIANNA STATE CARS! Hundreds of thousands of cars were flooded out in Katrina, and have been sold to out of state people who repair them and sell them at good prices. The water has totally fucked those cars, no matter how good the repair job.

Carfax isn't everything, but it is a tool amoungst others.

I used carfax for the last car i bought, it was pretty helpfull. Interesting comment about the louisianna state cars though.

A good way to test it is get a report on a car you or a family member owns that you know the history of and see what pops up.

No new entries for 2 years means absolutely nothing.
