What's the BEST digital camera for under $1000?

I want the best of the best w/o going professional in price.

I checked out that steve guy and it only made my decision harder.

Can you please give me some good ones?

So far I have checked out:

Sony S85
Sony 707
Nikon 5000
Canon G2

Anyway, even though I'm not a profesional photographer, someone told me to spend a couple hundred more and get the Olympus E20. But that sucker's like 1500!

Any help?

Thanks

Olympus 'z' series... approx 500 and they are in something like #3050z now. We just took a look at the newest ones just for fun since our 2xxxz is still just fine to use. We paid out like 1200 for it and all the perks but now the price is wayyyy down.

And it is as good or better than all the big name brands. It
is worth a look to compare at a store that has the big names as well as olympus. Bestbuy, compusa, circuit city etc all have them.

That one is the newer one of what we have. We saw the c3050z I think the other day for 499. Great cameras for the price.

We went with it since it did the same things as the sonys etc but they wanted 1500 or more with no perks a couple of yrs ago for the bigger names. And it actually was pert easy to learn as well. (came from a simple dig camera that does its job but not alot of fanciness to it)

The Olympus had a better 'feel' to it too and thats important to us.

I have the Sony 707 and I LOVE it.... Best buy out there, IMO.

Canon Powershot G2 is what I use, and I can thoroughly recommend it for quality and features.

Olympus is great for digital camera. They have three lines, the Consumer, the "Pro-sumer" and a Pro line. If you look to their Prosumer line, whatever they are calling it these days (the top end stuff, except for the E-series which is pro) you will find some great cameras.

A year ago I got the C-2100uz and it is a fantastic camera. The only problem I have with it is the clarity under low light situations, but that is a problem with virtually all digital cameras. (If you take highest-rest shots and scale down, it is less of a problem.) All in all, I am very happy with this camera. It is like having a good midrange SLR that shoots digital. Very cool. I believe they recently replaced it with an even better model.

Minolta has some good models, like Dimáge S-404 or Dimáge 7i!
