US: Land of the tortured?

This is one of the most dangerous and worrying laws that this administration has done so far. In summary, it legalizes torture. Wether you're a US citizen or not, you can be tortured without the right to habeas corpus or anything at all. In fact, you can just "disappear", like it happened in Latin American dictatorships.

Why legalize torture? One of the main reasons is so that the people responsible can't be taken to trial for war crimes since they will be operating, torturing, killing, and "disappearing" people from all over the globe under the cover of this law. And yes, it authorizes the government to do this to US citizens under the most basic suspicion of being involved with terrorists.

Guantanamo is not only for Iraquis any more.

I'd like to dedicate this thread to that guy who said in one of those poker threads that the US is not becoming a police state.

Here's the article:

And here's something your very own Benjamin Franklin said once:

Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.

Quite frankly, I'm devastated by this news. Sorry if it has been posted already. I just can't pick myself up after reading such a thing.

It seems scenario from star trek universe will become true.If USA who act as world police become corrupted, then probaly rest of world will be also corrupted.

T-minus 30 seconds until you read this in this thread from some blind right wing sheep cock holster:

1. You are an idiot conspiracy theorist bleeding heart liberal...godiekthx.

2. I hope they torture more people. It's good for business and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy covered in safety.

3. You have no idea what you're talking about.

4. Where do they get these people (with a little orange laughy smiley.)

5. All of the above.

That is what happens in a Kingdom ... The King rules....

President asserts power to edit privacy reports
Bush defies Congress, says he has right to change Homeland Security bills

WASHINGTON - President Bush, again defying Congress, says he has the power to edit the Homeland Security Department?s reports about whether it obeys privacy rules while handling background checks, ID cards and watchlists.

In the law Bush signed Wednesday, Congress stated no one but the privacy officer could alter, delay or prohibit the mandatory annual report on Homeland Security department activities that affect privacy, including complaints.

But Bush, in a signing statement attached to the agency?s 2007 spending bill, said he will interpret that section ?in a manner consistent with the President?s constitutional authority to supervise the unitary executive branch.?

The country I knew in the early 90's as the USA is long gone... Welcome to the new Reich :thumbsup

Seems you were way off. They're just ignoring the thread, which is a lot worse than getting flamed or being pointed at and called a lefty.

That's how bad it can get. Imagine if you were tortured by mistake.

This is truly one of the saddest things that I've heard this year.
