Violetta 10-05-2006 07:46 PM

It's been a while... but I build them myself! Def need a new one now! It's getting old and dusty!

Ice 10-05-2006 07:46 PM

I use to build my own but now I just get a dell.

I use to need the best top of the line for no reason and did play games with it but now I just use it for work stuff and if it can run Photoshop fast I'm happy.

You'd have to build your own for reasons other than price, because you can definitely get super nice machine for the same price or less than building your own of the same parts.

Bro Media - BANNED FOR LIFE 10-05-2006 10:33 PM

dell.....

notabook 10-05-2006 10:36 PM

I haven’t gamed in a long time, but I wanna get one to play Spore. I’ve bought most the components and ready to assemble, just waiting on the nforce 590 boards for Intel to be released:

E6600 Core 2 Duo Processor (went with Silent Water as cooler choice)
1x Asus 7900GTX (will SLI in future)
2GB Corsair XMS 6400
2x Raptor 75GB in Raid-0 array
700 Watt GameXStream OCZ
Aerocool AeroEngine II Case (wish I would have went with Antec 180B)
Motherboard: Asus nforce 590 whatever when it’s out.
A dvd burner/a case fan or two/usb floppy (yeah RIGHT LOL)/etc.
Total cost: Roughly $1500.
Total time to assemble: About a hour.

For an hour of time I’m able to have a kickass system for 1500 bucks, whereas the cheapest retail computer I can get pre-built with everything that I want (and let’s face it most of the time retail computers do NOT have everything you want) is going to cost about 2k-2.2k minimum. I’d much rather spend the hour it takes assembling everything than pay the extra $700+ for retail.

baddog 10-05-2006 10:40 PM

I used to . . . but at today's prices ..

Just kidding bro. :thumbsup

Swish 10-05-2006 11:00 PM

Always build desktops and buy laptops. 50/50 for servers depending on the cost vs need.

starpimps 10-05-2006 11:03 PM

ya building for desktops is key its tough to find somethin u want retail

KrisKross 10-05-2006 11:03 PM

I build my own. Aside from an extra stick of RAM, a USB 2.0 card, a DVD burner and a new hard drive, my machine is 4+ years old. I really want to build a new one, though I really have no reason to do so.

I don't think so. Using this sample: E6600 Core 2 Duo, 1x Asus 7900GTX, 2x Raptor 75GB, 2GB Corsair XMS 6400, 700 Watt GameXstream OCZ PSU, Aerocool AeroEngine II Case, Asus Mobo, dvd writer/other junk/etc will cost around $1500 for you to do it yourself if you shop around.

Cheapest DELL equivilant: $3013

Not sure where you can buy retail computers with similar specs @ similar price other than shitty emachines LOL.

A-Bomb 10-05-2006 11:08 PM

I kick it Old Skool and use this for posting in GFY... which is probably why my posts suck ass.

V_RocKs 10-05-2006 11:44 PM

I usually build my own...

But Dell offered me:

Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (2.40GHz, 512Kx2)
4GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
256MB nVidia GeForce 7300LE TurboCache (actually mid to low end...)
160GB SATA II Hard Drive (7200RPM)
16X DVD ROM Drive and 48X Combo Drive

For $1,100...

So I said, cool.... Send it...

That was Sept 19th... It is now Oct 6th (in 15 minutes) and guess what? Their order checker says it will be here Oct 16th.... I could pay $132 to get it on Friday the 13th but I thought about it for a week or so and decided the 16th sounded a lot better than Jason's birthday... I am just wierd like that...

footmonkey 10-05-2006 11:52 PM

I built my own Linux machine from second hand PC components once but will get someone else to build my next machine.

Vitasoy 10-06-2006 12:54 AM

Related question: I've been using some over-priced monster bullshit and don't feel like paying that much for a cleaning product. What do you people use to clean your LCD monitors with?

Same stuff I've been using, but considering how much they overcharge on their cables I figure it's the same way with their cleaning product :1orglaugh Wanted something cheaper but you are right with your second post... with monitors may not wanna skimp out.

bobby666 10-06-2006 02:51 AM

i stopped building my own computers , there are so many cheap offers/sales around

fallenmuffin 10-06-2006 02:57 AM

notabook, when I purchased my recent overpriced but worth it Apple monitor I made sure to have the stores recommended cleaner on the same invoice. One less "owner error" to worry about when/if problems arise.

(I'm so deaf from loud music, target shooting and motorcycles that I can't tell the difference between Monster cables and doorbell wire.)
