I agree. While my family lived in Botswana (just north of South Africa, and as you can guess, bloody hot), she passed a car with some young children locked inside. She had a nearby police officer come and smash one of the windows to get the kids out.

There is stupidity all over the place. I was pumping my gas and this woman next to me leaves 3 toddlers in her car with her car still running and her purse in the passenger seat while she goes in the store and lollygags around like everything is peaches.

I told her when she came out that if some pervert was around, her car and all of her kids would have been long gone. She couldn't even look me in the face. she just lowered her eyes, got in the car and drove off.

I'd wager most of these abuse cases are single women saddled with a child they didn't want in the first place.

A helpless child's #1 defense is parents (note the plural) who care. Studies have shown that children of single parents are statistically at significantly higher risk for just about every peril they can face, from physical and sexual abuse to disease and mental health.

I think in australia is a law that doesn´t allow to leave children in the car alone/unattended at any time ... but they have their incidents too ...

I have personally seen this happen. I was living in some flats/units in my teens. I went down to the carpark at around 11am to find a child sitting locked in his car seat with all the windows up and all the doors locked in the very hot Australian Summer sun. This child was wet through, sweat running down his face and body. I first tried to get the child out.....unable to open the doors I ran up to the unit where I knew this child lived. I banged on the door screaming for the mother. She answered the door putting some clothes on and obviously very high/stoned. In the background I could see this loser laying in her bed. I screamed at her that her boy was in the car and to get him out immediately, she screamed back that it was none of my business and pushed past me saying that he had only been in there an hour or so....the reason.....he was sleeping and she didn't want to disturb him. BULLSHIT....she wanted to get high and get laid. This is a women who I babysat for once and she told me that if he didn't drink his bottle of milk to add some Bailey's Irish Cream to it so that he would drink it and then sleep.....WTF. Needless to say I didn't do anything like that.
I rang the police and they came asked me some questions and proceeded to her apartment and found not only a sick child but drugs....she was carted off and the child was put into protective custody.....she never came back to the units, don't know what happened to her or her child...but hopefully he living a happy and long life with someone who loves and cares for him.
