$3 a month for a brand new 3.6 ((8)) processor Xeon server...

Well for about a hour that's what he got.

:1orglaugh that what the first customer today that signed up after our latest shared server power house went live. This 8.. that's right! 8 cpu xeon server with external clustered MYSQL, Bind, and Hard drive load balancers can make anyone wet. Especially for 3 bucks.

Thanks Squishy that's exactly what I meant. I didn't want to spam, I just wanted to bring up this crazy server I helped set up today.

8 cpu's in one server? What would anyone need that for? Im not a tech guy but I always went on the idea get a bunch of average boxes on a load balancer and if one dies oh welll the others go on.

chaze 10-04-2006 12:42 AM

It's just for loading speed and consistency, with php and mysql so common now you need a much higher cpu peak level to maintain a consistent performance level that won't get compromised.

Actually adult sites with php and mysql are typically the most dangerous for cpu issues. :1orglaugh pain in the butts

also since we build the server they don't cost much more then the brand name ones most hosts are over paying for.

Its not 8 physical CPUs, its a 2 CPU system

Its just running hyperthreading and dual core each is a factor of 2

2 (x2 ht) = 4
4 (x2 dual core) = 8 virtual CPUs that are listed in say /proc/cpuinfo

As far as hosts paying more for the same specs, yes that's true because they buy quality hardware that will last for years :) Nothing wrong with a few good custom built machines if you know what you're doing. But what happens when 4 years down the line your Power Supply blows, will you have a spare one that will work in that chassis on hand?

There are advantages/disadvantages to everything :) keep it in mind

True, good call.

It's the latest technology and it shows. This thing has benchmark tests off the charts. Of course the $800 Intel mobo and 4 chunks of 1 gig ram help to.

I wouldn't pay an extra $1000 because it says dell, we buy names for our hardware because they know what they are doing not so when people look at the server they think it's cool.

Anyways Daniel can out build a Dell server in his sleep :winkwink:
