Do you ever get so tired that you can't program?

I've been going about 3 weeks now doing 18+ hour days on one project and i'm finding that as about 18 hours hits now I start getting blurry vision and can't concentrate... eventually I just have to go to sleep and start over in the morning.

This happen to any of you other coders out there? Other than doing cocaine, got any solutions?

Violetta 10-03-2006 07:53 PM

yeah.,.. get a realistic timeframe mate! Dont work your brain empty! 18 hours per day is just to much! Take a day off and get a long night sleep and take a walk in the park for some fresh air! Your project can wait...

squishypimp 10-03-2006 07:54 PM

red bulls, lots and lots of red bull.

WiredGuy 10-03-2006 07:56 PM

18 hours per day is to much to code. You need to space your time out efficiently, take more breaks, relax. Work smarter not harder.

every 10 hours take a 2 hour nap

Nookster 10-03-2006 08:06 PM

Yea, same happens to me sometimes. Just take a break when that happens, or get some sleep. I've also found out that taking breaks every few hours prevents those symptoms. Energy drinks won't help much with your vision and the symptoms...other than relieving your tiredness. :2 cents:

18 hours coding straight?
this sounds like impossible to me?

But im coding just from time to time so it may be just me

GrouchyAdmin 10-03-2006 08:49 PM

After 18 CONSECUTIVE hours, my brain is mush. Give four here, take a break, four more, eat something.. then I actually usually continue to get work done.

Sure... but 18 hour days is not going to make much progress. Only my 2 cents, but prefer coding first thing in a day for a period of about 5 hours, then quit and do something totally different. It saves a hell of a lot of error corrections overall.

What are you man a robot that can work 18 hours a day? Oh my that's bad, you need some rest and vitamins. Don't fuss yourself too much.. breathe man, breathe......

joehoya 10-03-2006 09:34 PM

Go out and find one of those asian massage palors that gives you a happy ending. Get the massage and the happy ending and sleep for a few hours. Or you could just get some sleep. Its a lot cheaper but less fun.

bl4h 10-03-2006 09:40 PM

I get like that after about 8 hours. Your brian truley runs out of juice. Coding takes more thought than anything ive ever done.

After a few days of this I get tired of it to the point where i have no more motivation and ability to concentrate. Its another few weeks before I feel motivated to code hard once again.

thats why people have problems getting coders to finish their work shhh

E$_manager 10-03-2006 09:50 PM

You have to sleep - there is no other way.

Keeping lots of irons in the fire is important, you never know what project will succeed and which will fail.

Whenever you're in the USA and you start thinking about sleeping... remember, the aussies are working hard... and while you're sleeping they are building something to beat you.

Whenever you're waking up, remember the asians were working hard all night... and while you were sleeping they wrote something to beat you.

The Internet does not sleep and if you don't work like a wild animal on crack you WILL fall behind. This business (the Internet) is a 24/7 competition to see who can crank out the best and baddest the fastest.

I never work less than 15 hours a day. (That's why i'm rich.. that's really the only secret.) I usually work 18-20 per day... and I usually have 3-4 projects at a time getting off the ground. My wife hates it... but 90%+ of the projects I touch turn into gold.

Just my 2 cents.

brandadult 10-03-2006 09:56 PM

You just need to have the proper motivation. Put a stack of 100's on the desk next to you or something.

fallenmuffin 10-03-2006 09:59 PM

Happens all the time.. you just find a stopping point and pass out for 12+ hours

dynastoned 10-03-2006 10:03 PM

you must be talking about those times where its day one moment, next thing you know its dark outside, then before you know it the sun is coming up again. yeah i've had my share of those days. :)

There are natural limits to how long you can work until you break down. Don't try to fuck with the laws of nature. They always win.

..it happened sometimes

k0nr4d 10-04-2006 01:38 AM

I can barely code 8 hours let alone 18.

I used to get reallybad headaches when i first started

E$_manager 10-04-2006 09:46 AM

If you wouldn't sleep, you will not be able to work properly, will make mistakes and do it slow. So you have to say "stop, i am going to bed". No coffein, no energy drinks.

Drake 10-04-2006 09:54 AM

Every time I sit down to do any work my vision goes blurry and I can't concentrate. I'm just not cut out for work, period.

Blogster 10-04-2006 09:55 AM

sometimes i code / script till in the morning that i feel like i would puke every moment.. i guess, my body wants to say "Dear, go to bed, its better for you, you need it" ;)
