What has become of our National "NEWS" stations?

What has become of our National "NEWS" stations? I was at the gym this morning and I was pretty much forced to watch MSNBC for 20 minutes while I did some cardio. I'm not even kidding when I tell you they spent at least 10 of that talking about who fathered Anna Nicole Smith's baby. They had some reporters on the scene and even did a little "investigation" into the matter. I can't believe this was a headline on one of the largest National News channels.

I get my news from the net and my entertainment from tv...

The major news networks have all become reflections of our society.

People don't care about millions of poor Africans being killed in Darfur. But they do care about Anna Nicole Smith.

I can't even watch the news without laughing half the time, it's such a joke.

Even worse is the right wing, left wing bias going on. Journalists have abandoned all their traditional ethics and stories are now shaped to favor either the Republican views or the Democrat's, depending on if you are watching CNN or Fox.

Yeah...I don't watch the news much but I can bet that there is more/less coverage about the Republican Senator from Florida depending on the channel and I would bet their views of the situation are apparent

Compared to when? A decade ago we had to endure 24 hour coverage of the OJ Trial for weeks on end.

I've NEVER really considered television to be a good news and analysis source. Even the better news programming like the BBC is just basic news stories with light analysis. Broadcast news does have some pretty good interviews with politicians. Decidedly short on interviews with historians, political theorists and think-tankers.

News and blog aggregators combined with (history) books is a pretty good way to monitor the news and understand the context. Before the WWW, newspapers and magazines combined with an education in history was a good way to go.
