is this new? (domain stuff)
Had a domain expire on me, it was never used, just sitting around, it use to be, when a domain expired you could go reregister it (if you wanted it)
Now, it seems the registrar (registerfly atleast) basically holds the domain themselves and when you try to renew it/register it again, they say its in a redemption period and will cost 209.00 to renew the 9 dollar domain. Not sure if this is new and everyone is doing it, or its another registerfly shady tactic. |
Thanks for the heads up...

What kind of time frame are you talking about?
|
Many registrars are doing that now. They basically hold it hostage and try to set up a bidding war between the original owner and potential suitors.
It sucks. |
everyones doing it...just for different amounts
|
thats fucked up, they can charge you anything they want?

The registrar I use charges under 3.00 for that.
They hold it like 30 days or so. |

Domain timetable:
1) Domain expires. 2) Expiry till 30 days later, you can renew it at regular rates. 3) 30 days after expiry till 60 days, enters Redemption Period. Registrars charge money to restore it as it costs Them money. $200 you quoted is very high though. 4) 60 days after expiry, domain enters Pending Delete. No one can get it back, 5 days from now it'll be released back to the open market. (Days quoted above sometimes vary registrar-registrar) |
