Official in S.C.: Sterilize bad parents
 

CHARLESTON, S.C. - A City Council member, reacting to a video store holdup believed to have been carried out by children, says parents who can't properly care for their kids should be sterilized.

"We pick up stray animals and spay them," Larry Shirley said in a story published Saturday by The Post and Courier of Charleston. "These mothers need to be spayed if they can't take care of theirs. Once they have a child and it's running the street, to let them continue to have children is totally unacceptable."

Shirley's comments come after police say a video store was held up by a group of children, including a 14-year-old girl suspected of wielding a BB gun that looked like a pistol.

The holdup happened about 9 p.m. Wednesday at a Hollywood Video store. A 14-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy were charged as juveniles with armed robbery. A 9-year-old boy was not charged because police said he was too young. He was released to his mother.

This may make me sound bad but in a way I agree. A while back I read a story in the paper about this couple and their kids. The wife was legally mentally retarded and her husband had an IQ that was 5 points above the limit for being legally retarded. For a while they had an apartment, he had a job and they had a life. Then she got pregnant, but didn't know how to care for the kid so the state took it away. A year later the same thing happened and that kid was also taken away.

Then then guy loses his job and they were literally living in a shed and she gets pregnant again and again that kid is taken away. Eventually he gets another job, they get another little apartment and she gets pregnant again. This time she told the state she wanted to keep the kids and they are giving her parenting classes, but she has a long way to go and the social worker said the best she can probably hope for is visitation.

Am I a bastard to think that maybe people like this should have their tubes tied? You know she is going to keep having kids that are going to enter into the system. You have to pass a test to be allowed to drive a car, shouldn't there be some rules put on parenthood?

That person should be President... there should be breeding laws that are heavily enforced. Bad parents come in all shapes, colors, sizes, income levels, and intellectual capacities.

Any woman that gives birth to a child addicted to any type of drug should be automatically sterilized. Deadbeat dads should be castrated by law and maybe they should start teaching the realistic side of childbirth and parenting to children. If more teenage girls knew that giving birth involves either naturally tearing or being cut from your vagina to your ass, losing your bowels in front of your doctor and nurses and chaging diaper poo after being puked on at 3:00am, then maybe there would be fewer idiots having children that they can't and won't care for properly.

Why is it that stupid people are the first to breed and we have to always pay for them. Im sick and tired of working my ass off to further myself,my family and then pay tons taxes, so some crack whore can live on welfare with 6 kids.

The obvious thing to do would be sterilize the poor, since poverty equates to crime and who gives a f*ck about those people anyway. They are not even people really, are they.

The only potential snag is that our economic system dictates the existence of the poor, as well as the middle class and rich... but hey, when did logic ever get in the way of peoples' prejudices...

It was pretty ignorant in my honest opinion.

I've said this same thing many times. I think the first step is for the government to pay people to get sterilized. Many drug addicts and other generally unsavory people would go for that voluntarily. In the long run, it would cost less money than it does to give those same people welfare, cheap housing, and nice clean jail cells.

Unlike the person who responded before you did, at least you managed to sense that I might not have been serious. I would have thought my second paragraph - the comment about logic and prejudice - should have made that quite clear.

Most of us would like to believe we can determine who our children become, but the reality is that for better and worse, many, many children grow up in contradiction of their families and environments. This would become a very strange society if we maintained the idea that someone is innocent of a crime until proven guilty, and yet declared unborn children unfit to live because of the shortcomings of their parents.

This councilman's statement however - although he likely doesn't realize it and he has certainly reached a conclusion with which I have zero sympathy - does at least reflect two factors which are real.

The first is that the vast majority of children grow up to become adults at or below the same economic level as their parents. The second is that crime correlates much more closely to poverty than to the amount of resources put into policing, etc. So yes, if you completely ignore the "codes" on which our society is presently based and don't have even the most basic understanding of how our economy works, I suppose you could decide that sterilising the poor would reduce crime. Note: I realize this guy didn't mention the word "poor" but we all know that middle-class parents wouldn't dream of letting their children run the streets like stray dogs, so let's be clear who he is stereotyping.

Don't forget it's election time. The Goebel's style of TV ads - scare everyone and then offer to protect them - have already started, so we can expect more than the usual number of outrageous comments from politicos over the next month.

Only a very small percentage of your taxes goes goes to "some crack whore can live on welfare with 6 kids", if more of our taxes was allocated to helping poor people, we'd have a better society...

I've always thought that when you go to sign up for kid #3 for welfare, you should have to sign for the depo provera shot too.
