it's costing me $400 to install a $750 LCD TV ..???

Why so much to run 20' of line .. I'm having the 32" LCD I bought for the bedroom mounted on the wall and they are running a outlet / cable line (just in case I need it) S-Video line and a HD line .. all in the wall and to some shelving 20' feet away .. $400 just seems like a lot but I can't find anyone cheaper .. I could do it myself but they are making custom wires .. kinda sucks but I guess it will be done right :disgust

BJ 09-28-2006 04:58 PM

I feel your pain, this was over 400 just ot hang it above my fireplace, all the wiring was already done.

Dude, Best Buy wanted to charge me $500 and I didn't even want them to hide the cables. It will take 2 guys, probably an hour or two total max, insurance, and transportation/delivery... but still, $500?! No way! It took my friend 30 minutes to install it for me.

That's a beautiful room! Won't the heat affect the television?

clicker 09-28-2006 05:13 PM

I went to best buy and spoke to the installation manager. I asked if he did side work, most of them do. Got his number. Give it a try works great and can save a few bucks.

biftek 09-28-2006 06:20 PM

it's the price you pay when you can't do shit yourself

After Shock Media 09-28-2006 06:26 PM

May I please ask what the fuck are custom wires?
Wouldn't they all be custom unless you are using exactly the foot measurement of the wire anyways?

Are they fishing it through a wall?
Drilling in from the outside?

Basically what the fuck are they doing?

I just see some wires being cut and being crimped. Some holes being drilled. An outlet cover installed, and a couple support anchors. If that is the case I highly suggest you just find a handyman.

I can do it .. I'm very handy .. when i bought this house i gutted the entire kitchen and installed a new one .. I build custom closets and wall units .. I started working on construction crews when i was 16 and was in the carpentry union for a few years ... I just don't have the Time ..

Aftershock .. by custom I mean they are making cut to fit wires ... I need them to run about 22 feet of wire and to be honest I haven't seen HD wires that long and don't want to make my own .. they are running everything in the wall (including adding a power outlet) up to the attic and down to the components on the other side of the room .. I don't feel like crawling into that part of the Attic it has the spray in insulation shit in it .. I like to come home and it's done ... It just seems like a lot to run wires .. I had the guy run 5 lines from my fuse box to the attic space I'm finishing and it was like a $150 .. why so much to hang a TV?

Pete-KT 09-28-2006 06:55 PM

TREXXXX, Juicy TRex is payin for it :)

tranza 09-28-2006 07:17 PM

Post some pics when it's done.....

Jessica Rosalini 09-28-2006 07:43 PM

the way things are going tech wise you should get good use of the wiring. that room will always be TV ready. have it done right the first time. That's what my dad always told me

marketsmart 09-28-2006 08:28 PM

well it costs money to do things...

emthree 09-28-2006 08:54 PM

Get a friend and do it yourself.
That's way too much imo.

Nothing comes cheap with the flat screens....

I went to the store 2 days ago to get a 50 in plasma, but after looking around at the screen quality, the plasmas and LCD's were not very impressive.... I decided to get a 61 inch DLP HDTV with 1080p, amazing picture, the plasmas did not even come close. I cannot hang it on the wall, but the picture quality more then makes up for being trendy.

flashfire 09-29-2006 12:50 AM

pffft, do it yourself man...thats a ripoff

I've seen those and they are very nice .. but this is just a 32" for my bedroom .. the install is going to cost almost as much as the Tv .. if it was a $2400 tv I wouldn't care but it's a $750 32" lcd tv ..:Oh crap

Hows the closet your in holding up?? :winkwink:

OldJeff 09-29-2006 06:30 AM

It is all your fault for buying a cheap TV ;)

2 guys a days pay (with travel time) Insurance, possible return trip if something is not right, etc., etc.

It sucks but everything is expensive.

Were looking to have some repair done to an unused set of stairs in our house (outside) and have a new handrail installed, quotes were $1500-$2000, this is replacing flagstone on 4 stairs.

Price of any labor is insane, especially here in the North East

Basic_man 09-29-2006 07:16 AM

Man, these wires cost alot! That's why it's so pricy!

NiggaRiche 09-29-2006 07:51 AM

takes money to make money.

same logic lol

no problems, turns on with a light switch, easy maintainence, etc..... its also a very efficient way to heat the house.

sumphatpimp 09-29-2006 08:08 AM

I think you can get a local electricain to do that for a lot less.
best buy is ripping you off.
call around, see what you can do.

$400 is cheap. My new home I have been getting quotes to wire the place up, install about 10 plasmas and a few lcd's.

For a 27" LCD one company wanted $399 for install, $299 for a mount, and $299 for a surge protector, $99 for IR wiring. Go figure.

Well lets see.

Van for equipment = $30K

Liabilty insurance = $5K/yr

Tools = Varies

Cost of labor

Meeting code will add to the cost.

Custom length to place in walls and pull.

Drill threw fire stops in wall.

Cost of cable and connectors. Copper has tripled in price in the last few months.

You'll eat atleast ahalf a day for that crew to get there and do the job correctly.

Do it yourself if you don't like it. Installing in a residence is a bitch. Unless you were a friend, I'd walk away from the job. Not worth it for the small profit.

Ross 09-29-2006 08:45 AM

Does sound expensive. You can get any Plasma/LCD put on your wall and everything done for £150 over here. Around $280.

I know thats no use to you, but shop around. I bet you find someone cheaper. Wether its as good quality I don't know...

Klen 09-29-2006 08:52 AM

this is the guy that does my electric work. Bestbuy wanted $400 and would only run the one component cable .. this guy is running a power line and HD / Cable / and S-vid line ..so I guess it's not real bad ... I can do it myself .. It's just a time issue ..I'm going to look into buying the cables myself and running them ..it will be a few hours Saturday ..

Is it not dangerous to place technics on the fireplace? No heat?

Sosa 09-29-2006 09:25 AM

hd wires wtf? are you placing your receivers etc farther away? Why are you running anything svideo, why not use component cables atleast? Sure does seem expensive.

headless ghost 09-29-2006 09:59 AM
