.MOBI domains

There's been a total silence on this subject on the boards... now that the land-rush is over... thought I'd start some discussion.

So, anyone here got some good .mobi names?

What are your plans with them, future expectations about how much traffic they will start getting, etc.

Was able to get a few excellent ones myself... not yet sure about the traffic they'll start getting though, but I've read large mobile companies have plans to start .mobi promotions, so probably gonna be a lucrative investment.

I got jmp.mobi

This domain can be accessed simply by pressing the sequential numbers 5, 6, 7 on a phone. I think it is perhaps the best .mobi domain. "jump to jmp.mobi, and get to where you want to go"

Comments?

What kind of cracked ghetto phone are you using?

Google Image Results for "telephone keypad"

yep, I noticed most good numeric combinations were taken by asian companies.... 555.mobi would have been sweet....

The weird thing was that I registered some awesome .mobis through Dotster and Dotster said no other Dotster client had submitted a registration request for these names yet... now I see in whois that Dotster got most of these domains, but Dotster says they were ordered by another client. Weird.

I think he might have meant the business phones that have the qwerty keyboard layout and the numbers are placed horizontally like on your normal keyboard.

I don't think that's what he was talking about. :error

Come to think of it I would rather own twat.mobi, jam.mobi, or map.mobi.

Not to knock anyone in this thread, but I personally hope .mobi dies a quick death. Stupidest TLD I've ever heard of as it completely goes against naming conventions - [subject/medium].[organization].[org type]

And whoever the dipshit was that decided on four characters for mobile devices should be shot.

SeniorX 09-27-2006 07:57 AM

I understand your perspective, but it was created for mobile device compatible content only. So, when on my mobile device, I would go to yahoo.mobi instead of yahoo.com

But now Yahoo is forced to purchase yahoo.mobi, as are all other companies who wish to keep their name branded under this new TLD. Personally, I'd prefer wap.yahoo.com. Or better yet, for yahoo.com to sniff the accept headers and display the appropriately formatted content. Again, that's just me, though.

so is this how it gonna work, you dial numeric equevalent for the domain on the phone to get to that .mobi domain site?

jasonir 09-27-2006 09:51 AM

No they act as normal domain names.

MacDevilish 09-27-2006 10:07 AM

The .mobi extension does have tremendous potential to be a lucrative investment, especially when you consider that even the most basic mobile phone browsers allow you to save a url in memory, AND that the .mobi pages will be able to URL forward. The only caveat on this is that the landing page needs to be .mobi compliant and meet with their display parameters (not content related, but format related). Other than that though, this has the potential to be an all new moneymaker, considering that 4 internet ready mobile devices are sold for every ONE pc...

Didn't get any....

squishypimp 09-27-2006 10:43 AM
